NATIONAL FEEDER & STOCKER CAT
TLE SUMMARY - Week Ending Sept. 10
—Total Receipts. 421,700; last week 382,200;
last year 478,400 Direct. 58.300, last week

last week 8,300, last year 105,600 Auctions*
322,000, last week 296,600, last year 295,900.
This week's auction volume included 34 percent
over 600 lb and 44 percent heifers
Compared to last week, yearling feeder cattle
prices were steady to 2.00 higher Calf prices
were uneven, with weaned calves selling steady
to 3 00 higher, but soft bawlers and Southeast
ern crossbreds trended weak to as much as 3.00
lower on lighter demand. Demand should be
good from winter wheat buyers, but most are
busy sowing their crop and simply dont have
the time to care for new arrivals The few wheat
interests that are in the market are quickly
snatching up the weaned and vaccinated offer
ings that will be easy to straighten up.
The backgrounders that wait to enter the
market will find a double edged sword; mostly
unweaned-fleshy calves and unpredictable
weather with hot days and cold nights. This can
quickly cause medicine costs and death rates to
soar. But, calf buyers wouldnt want to trade
places with yearling buyers who are paying
close to the same price per pound for a lot more
weight. Prices for 700-900 lb feeders broke new
ground again this week, along with finished cat
tle and boxed beef cut-out values. It’s still not
clear how high these markets can go, but we
may find out soon. Cattle and beef markets are
showing signs of top-side resistance; with un
even feeder demand, a lighter finished cattle
movement, and a volatile futures market.
Packers bought around 110,000 less slaughter
cattle this week than they did last week and
some are electing to reduce slaughter rates rath
er than pay record prices for green cattle, even
if it means going dark. The Choice- Select
spread has grown to 30.00 cwt which sounds
even worse when you say its well over 200.00
per head. These record high Choice beef prices
are just now starring to hit the retail level which
could drive the housewife to a porkchop and
send the restaurant menu to the printshop.
Friday’s cattle- on-feed report was within ex
pectations with 3 percent less cattle on feed
September Ist than a year ago. There was also 3
percent less cattle marketed in the month of
August, but placements in August were 7 per
cent more than in 2002. These extra numbers
that were put on feed were a bit higher than
most experts had guessed, but a large percent
age of the increase weighed under 600 lbs. Also,
lowa feeders (which are mostly independent
farmers) placed 41 percent more cattle on feed
this August than they did a year ago. What a
com crop!
