826-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 13, 2003 O THE ANTIQUE DETECTIVE Anne Gilbert Some Lustreware Regains Its Collector Luster Lustreware as a whole has never recovered from the repro ductions palmed off on the public for several decades. The com monplace copper lustre mugs and jugs are still largely ignored by a sceptical public. However, when unique pieces, with inter esting transfer vignettes come to auction they can sell from high hundreds to over a thousand dol lars. Those with historical vignettes from the late 18th to early 19th century can be pricey. If you aren’t familiar with what lustreware is and looks like, here are some tips. First, neither copper or silver are used in its manufacture. Silver lustre is made from platinum and copper lustre from gold. Pink lustre is made from a solution applied heavily to earthenware objects both inside and out to give the appearance of silver. Entire silver lustre services were created up until the 1830 s. They were made in the same molds as the true sil ver tea services. In the 19205, 30s there was a big revival of interest. Companies like Johnston Broth ers of England made entire din ner services of silver lustre. Hispano-Moresque pottery used lustre techniques as early as 1320. Public Auction Sat., Sept. 20,2003 Commencing at 8:00 A.M. Located at 920 Chestnust Street, Mifflinburg (behind Amy’s Frosty Freeze). OWNERS & AUCTIONEERS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ACCIDENTS. CLUES: Today’s repros are heavy, (clunky) compared to early pieces. They seem to imitate the more bulbous shapes (for pitchers, jugs and goblets). The banding and floral decorations seem too brightly colored and perfect. Look for signs of wear on bottoms and handles. The gold lustreware had mod eled figures done in high relief. They are among the types cur rently being reproduced. Few of the early lustre pieces had a maker’s mark. Among the authentic marks to look for are Leeds, Wedgwood and Allerton. Some tea sets and dessert services are marked “Swansea.” They featured patterns painted against a white background.. Most sought after are the well designed pieces made by Edward Deakin for the London Exhibi tion in 1851. There were miniature teasets, busts, plaques, figures, candlesticks, flowerpots, salt dishes as well as dinnerware. Lustreware jugs were decora ted with a technique known as a “resist” pattern. This was done by painting the designs on the white, glazed surface with a substance soluble in water, to which color was added. The piece was then “lustered” and the painted design “resisted” the lustre. The white resist patterns were used against silver, blue or canary yel low backgrounds. How ever, rarities would be pink or apricot grounds. Much of the lustreware sent to America in the late 19th century was made at Bradley potteries in Long ton, England. Another type of lustre, “bronze” was made at Sunderland, England, dur ing the 1820 s and 30s. Jugs were inscribed with short poems and given to sailors before they under took a long voyage. These are among the rarest and most expensive. The Warman’s Price Guide lists to examples, one a “sailor’s farewell” transfer, dated 1800, that sold for $3,290. Anoth er “Captain Hull of the Constitu tion” valued at $5,750. Prices for old and 20th century lustreware depen on their region al popularity. They are usually ANTIQUE TOLEWARE - ANTIQUE COLTS & KY.
