Chris Kappler, who dominated last year’s Lincoln American Gold Cup, winning both the Friday evening grand prix and the Gold Cup Sunday, will be back to defend both titles Sept. 11-14 at the show grounds. Fresh from winning a team gold medal and an individual silver medal at the Pan Ameri can Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Kappler will be trying to win the lion’s share of the prize money for grand prix jumpers at the Gold Cup, which is increased to $lOO,OOO, divided between two classes, the $25,000 Welcome Stake Friday evening and the $75,000 Gold Cup Sunday afternoon. The all-jumper show also in cludes open speed, intermedi ate, junior, amateur, adult ama teur, and pony jumpers competing for over $150,000 total prize money. “The Gold Cup is one of the biggest shows we have all year,” said Kappler. “It’s a show we get up for, with a big class Friday evening and then the Gold Cup, one of the most prestigious classes of the year, on Sunday.” Saturday evening features the $5,000 Speed Challenge, a unique class in which the high est placed open, amateur and junior jumpers from each of their previous speed competi tions face each other for top honors. Although basically an all jumper show, much like the shows in Europe, the Gold Cup does also offer four ladies side saddle classes, including the Zone 2 Championship. Saturday is Children’s Day, with pony rides and face paint ing. Children who take a draw ing of one of their pets receive free admission on Saturday, and this art show is later judged and prizes awarded.
