Late in the week prices were another 2.00-3.00 higher as high Choice and Prime steers were as high as 93.00. The early week runs were light, however, the late week run included 575 head of nice hard-fed stock. Not only were records shattered in Lancaster County with prices up to 93.00, but several producers should have gotten a lock box to carry their checks home after the active Thursday New Holland Mar ket; as farmer/feeders were averaging from 88.00- 90.00 on their loads The western direct feedyards got the ball rolling on late Wednesday morning by moving their fats 3.00-4.00 higher in Kansas and Texas at 85.00, and from 86.00-87.00 in Nebraska. Dressed sales were 3.00-5.00 higher from 135.00- Meat markets had no choice but to increase as the price of finished cattle continues to rise. Choice cuts were at mostly 148.00 on Thurs day. with the Select cutout value from 131.00- Live cattle contracts at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange were also higher as they try to keep on an even keel with the western live cattle market. Spot September closed at 86.30 on Thurs day, with October at 84.90, and December at 82.77. The Holstein steer supply was mixed this week, with prices trending mostly 1.00-2.00 higher. Lean slaughter cows sold steady to 1.00 lower on Tues day, with all losses regained on Thursday as bids were steady to 1.00 higher. Fleshier cows sold 2 00-3.00 lower on Tuesday, with prices a full 3.00- higher late in the week The Thursday supply included a nice run of Breaking and Premi um White cows which drew good buyer activity Slaughter bulls sold steady to firm. On Thursday, leaders of the state agriculture departments from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania endorsed the third annual Northeast Small Farm and Rural Living Expo as a way to help pre serve farming in the Tri-State area. The Small Farm Expo, a project involving agricultural, cultural, and tourism entities from New Jersey, Pennsylva nia, and New York, is moving to Warren County, N.J., this year after its first two outings in Pennsylvania’s Pocono re gion.
