LAST YEAR
Compared to Thursday's very active market,
slaughter steers sold mostly steady on Monday,
with a very light (around 85 head) Tuesday run
trading fully steady to firm; prices are a full
3.00 higher when compared to last Tuesday’s
run. Bidding was fairly active both days as
prices for finished steers continue to impress
even the seasoned farmer/feeders and buyers as
high Choice and Prime steers are bringing from
86.00-89.00; with a few fancier singles flirting
with 90.00. What is even more impressive is
that prices are as high as they are the first week
of September. This time one year ago high
Choice and Prime steers were bringing from
mostly 65,00-67.00 at the Vintage Sales Stables,
with Choice steers from 63.00-65.50. Who
would have ever guessed there would have been
a 20.00 difference in prices a year later? The
com crop was also in bad shape this time last
year as the hot summer temperatures combined
with a lack of rain, and wrecked havoc on the
majority of the fields. This year most farmers
are worried about having too much rain, as com
fields have had more than an ample amount of
moisture, and could use some sunshine. Unfor
tunately, the second day of September feels
more like the first day of fall as temperatures
have dropped, and more heavy rains swept
through the area Monday night through Tues
day. A light test of Holstein steers sold with a
higher undertone. Slaughter heifers were not
well tested due to the mixed supply. Nationally,
the spot CME September live cattle contract
closed at 84.80 on Tuesday, with December at

81.37. The spot September feeder cattle contract
closed at 96.42 on Tuesday, with January at
88.87; if the contracts ate any indication, the
next several months could be very bullish to say
the least. Lean slaughter cows sold steady to
1.00 lower. Fleshier (65-80 percent lean) slaugh
ter cows sold 2.00-3.00 lower. There were not
enough slaughter bulls for a market test. The
two-day run was comprised of 277 head of
slaughter steeis, 38 head of slaughter heifers,
378 slaughter cows, 10 slaughter bulls, and 8
head of feeder cattle.

to slaughter, as many out sold the Graded

of Agriculture graded 772 head of heifers and
bulls for the sale, with an estimated 80 percent
of the graded run going back to feed.

however, that kosher demand was very good,
with the packer demand not to far behind. The
farmer/feeders who have had the nerve to put
that extra 30 days of feed on them were all but
speechless after they sold then steers at Thurs
day's sale. Everyone knows that the market has
been spiking sharply higher over the last month,
so these producers should be commended for
not only having ice water in their veins, but also
for continuing to finish steers that are second to
none. And the packer and kosher buyers who
are willing to pay up to 93.00 for the fancy
steers should ala> be commended as they must
have an awful lot of confidence in how good the
Lancaster County cattle kill. No matter what
side of the fence you were on at Thursday's sale,
whether you are a buyer or seller, you can bet it
will be a long time before anyone will forget
what fats brought the first week of September
2003 at the New Holland Sales Stables as re
cords were truly shattered. Holstein steers sold
mostly 1.00-2.00 higher when compared to last
Thuisday, with the slaughter heifer run to light
over the past several weeks to test the late week
supply. Fleshier slaughter cows sold 3.00-5.00
higher due to a very good supply as well as
good late week demand. Lean slaughter cows
sold steady to 1.00 higher. When compared to
last Thursday, slaughter bulls sold steady to
firm. The supply included 575 head of slaughter
steers, 564 slaughter cows, 88 slaughter heifers,
964 766 310 284 slaughter bulls, with 118 head of feeder ra»-
tle.

Compared to last Thursday, slaughter steers
sold fully 2.00-3.00 higher. The Tuesday run
was very light, although prices were 2.00-3.00
higher when compared to the early week run as
well. This marks the third consecutive week
that finished steers have gained 2.00-3.00 at the
Thursday New Holland sale. When high Choice
and Prime slaughter steers bring as much as
93.00, there is not much need for a commentary
to explain trade activity, buyer participation,
farmer/feeder attitude, etc. It is worth noting
