    Organic Farming Group To Offer
*New Farmer Course * At N.J. College
PENNINGTON, N.J. Have
you ever thought about starting a
farm? New Jersey’s proximity to
large consumer markets offers
tremendous opportunity for
small-scale farm businesses, but
the barriers to entry can be
daunting.
A new course offered by the
Northeast Organic Farming As
sociation of New Jersey (NOFA
NJ) and Mercer County Commu
nity College (MCCC), promises
to show would-be farmers that it
can be done.
“Exploring the Small Farm
Dream: Is Starting an Agricultur
al Business Right for You?” will
begin on Sept. 9, from 6:30 p.m.
to 9:30 p.m. and will run for four
consecutive Tuesday evenings.
Classroom sessions will be con
ducted at the Mercer County
Community College West Wind
sor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton
Road, West Windsor, NJ 08550.
In addition to the evening ses
sions, a field trip to a successful
small farm business in Mercer
County will be arranged.
Instructors for the course will
be Pam Flory, former farm man
ager at North Slope Farm in
Lambertville and at Spring Hill
Farm in Hopewell, and Laura
Sayre, program manager at

“Starting a farm business
like starting any business in
volves risk, but it can be extreme
ly rewarding,” said NOFA-NJ’s
executive director, Karen Ander
son. “Our hope is that this class
will help people make realistic
projections about those risks and
rewards, and move toward their
goal of working the land. De
mand for locally-grown and or
ganic produce in this region is
rapidly outpacing supply, so one
of our major goals as an organi
zation is to help new farmers
enter the field.”
