August 25-26,2003 Report Supplied By USDA Cattle Calves Sheep Goats THIS WEEK LAST WEEK LAST YEAR Compared to Thursday, Choice slaughter steers sold mostly steady on Monday, with the lower quality cattle trading a full 1.00 higher, with sales up to 2 00 higher at tunes on the Select and low Choice stock However, as the quality increased on Tuesday, bids did not. Granted there were a handful of higher quality cattle on offer that brought as much as 87 00, but the overall Tuesday run sold steady to weak The combined two day run was light, with buyers making due with what was available to fill their early week needs, which was very apparent on Monday as steers that might have a tough time grading Choice brought in the low-80‘s Nationally, the Western direct feed yards have opened up the flood gates for the second consecutive week on a Tuesday. This week live cattle sold 100 higher in Texas from 8100-82 00, with Kansas sales steady to 2 00 higher at mostly 82 00 The direct yards are pretty much in line with the August spot contract at the Mer cantile Exchange; even though the August contract ex pires at the end of the week, September closed at 8140 on Tuesday as the Board remains very bullish. Locally, the Tuesday Holstein supply was very light, and was not tested Although, there was an outstanding suppl) of high Choice and Prime Holstein steers on Monday that sold up to 100 higher, and still had people talking on Tuesday morning The slaughter heifer supply was to light to test Lean slaughter cows sold firm to 100 higher, with the fleshier cows trading mostly 1 00-2 00 lower The cow run was made up of primarily Leaner types, with the fleshier cows a light presence Slaughter bulls sold steady to 1 00 higher The two-day run was comprised of 245 head of slaughter steers, 44 slaughter heifers, 424 slaughter cows, 14 slaughter bulls, and 17 head of feeder cattle B & R CATTLE CO RD 1, Marietta PA 17547 Office Phone: 717*653*8164 Specializing in Stockers & Feeders JOHN BOWMAN 717*653*5728 RON RANCK 717*656*9849 744 1034 0 0 609 986 11 1 861 864 HAY. Thursday, Aug. 28,2003 Report Supplied By USDA Cattle Calves Sheep Goats MONDAY 964 766 310 284 LAST WEEK 1221 662 520 272 LAST YEAR 1422 625 Compared to Tuesday, slaughter steers sold 2.00-3 00 higher. The quality of the run was pretty good, or at least buyers are hoping they grade as high as they paid for them The supply was light as there was barely 300 head of steers on offer The first steer that walked through the door last week weighed over 1500 lbs and brought 84.25, with the first steer through the door this week tipping the scales at 1510 and bring ing 84.75. Needless-to-say, it was deja-vu as the sale was extremely active from then on You could easily say there were some national factors that might have had some heavy influence on the late week run. Such as the western trade breaking loose mid-week with steers as much as 2.00 higher, or it could be a higher boxed beef trade, or an extremely bullish Board that posted a couple more rounds of limit-up gains this week, with spot September at 83.30 and October at 82.05 at Thursday's close Whatever the reason, pro ducers are ecstatic to be receiving in the upper 80‘s for their Prime steers; with the current market not show ing a lot of signs of slowing down. Holstein steers sold steady to weak when compared to the nice Monday run, with prices trending with a firmer undertone when compared to last Thursday. There were not enough slaughter heifers on offer to test the market Lean slaughter cows sold mostly steady Fleshier slaughter cows sold mixed, with the bulk of the supply trending near steady. All grades of cows were mostly a full 1.00 lower when compared to last Thursday's mar ket. Yield Grade 1 slaughter bulls sold mostly 3.00 higher when compared to last Thursday, with the fleshier Yield Grade 2 bulls trading 1.00-2 00 lower The supply Included 309 head of slaughter steers, 459 slaughter cows, 28 slaughter heifers, 62 slaughter bulls, with 106 head of feeder cattle Slaughter Steers.
