Lancaster County Weekly Cattle New Holland, Pa. Report Supplied By USDA Friday, Aug. 15,2003 THIS WEEK LAST WEEK LAST YEAR Compared to last week's closing prices, slaughter steers sold 2.00-3.00 lower to begin the week. Most producers loaded their steers for Thursday morning's sale fearing the market was heading lower due to the losses early in the week. However, late week prices were fully steady to firm on a run that was comprised of over 600 head. The quality of the steer runs in Lancaster County has been somewhat sub-par this week, which is due in part to producers sending their cattle to town pro-finished as there is some uncertainty in the market. Al though, sub-par in Lancaster County means av erage Choice; and there are still enough high Choice and Prime cattle to go around to fill most orders. Feed, or lack of, is still an issue in the county which is another reason some cattle are coming to town early; although you can bet on some fancy fat cattle after the excellent com crop is harvested this fall. Farmer/feeders are turning over a lot of rocks trying to figure a solid marketing strategy to hit the next 'high' market; and there are currently several bullish indicators. First, futures contracts at the CME are ranging from 76.00-78.00 from August 2003, until April of 2004; they may not be 80.00, but contracts are usually in the 60.00 range through those months. Boxed beef cutout values also re main fairly good with Choice values from around 140.00-141.00 as of Thursday. Select boxes are trading at a 10.00 discount to Choice, but are still from roughly 130.00-131.00. The western direct cattle trade moved 1.00 lower in the Southern Plains this week, with live cattle at mostly 78.00. The Northern Plains cattle moved steady to 1.00 lower from 80.00-80.50 live and 127.00-128.00 on a dressed basis. Local Holstein steer prices remain good, with prices this week fully steady to firm. The slaughter heifer sup plies remain too mixed and too light to lest. Slaughter cows sold 1.00-4.00 lower to kick off the week, with the late week demand still re maining good as an active Thursday market was 1.00-2.00 higher. It is unusual for a market to be higher late in the week, unless packers are extremely short bought. Usually packers are more active early in the week as they fill their schedules. However, for the past few months a higher late week market can be attributed to good buyer attendance and demand. Slaughter bulls sold 2.00-3.00 lower early, with late week prices trending with a firmer undertone. The re ported supply this week in Lancaster County included 1034 head of slaughter steers, 159 head of slaughter heifers, 1031 head of slaugh ter cows, 159 head of slaughter bulls, and 177 head of feeder cattle. Calf Summary: Compared to last week's clos ing prices, slaughter calves sold mostly steady. Holstein bull calves suitable for special-fed veal bams sold muted for the week. The Tuesday run was quoted as higher, with the Number 2 and 3 calves in very good demand. Prices for the Number 3 bulls were as high as 117.00; with the Number 2‘s up to 187.00. However, the late week demand was not as good as most buyers had already Tilled their needs, and prices trended sharply lower. Producers continue to receive as much as 310.00 for their finished calves. This week in Lancaster County the PA Department of Agriculture graded 1314 head of bulls and heifers, compared to 13S8 the prior week.
