From left, Shelby Rarick, 11, showed Alimoe, her Main
Anjou cross steer who received reserve champion market
steer. Kristy Dietrich, 18, hangs onto Who, the grand
champion market steer at the 2003. Judge C.J. Farley,
Mount Joy, chose the winners at the 2003 Kutztown Fair
Beef Show.
‘Who’ Helps Dietrich
Place High
KUTZTOWN (Berks Co.) Who, a Black Angus steer, can be
confused for a dog and Kristy Dietrich is going to be sad to let him
go-
“I cry every year,” she said. “This year is going to be especially
hard.”
Kristy, the 18-year-old daughter of Janies and Donna Dietrich, did
extremely well at the Kutztown Fair steer show. She took grand
champion showman and fitter and grand champion market steer with
Who, her best county steer so far.
Kristy said she had her hopes high, but anything can happen. She
was confident because Who was by her side. She said her homebred
steer is like a dog. He moos to wake her up in the morning and cud
dles up to her when she is taking care of him throughout the day.
The Dietrich family lives on a large beef farm in Hamburg, where
Kristy has grown up around steers and become accustom to working
with them.
“I am so proud of her, because she deserves it. She is such a hard
worker and she always does her own work,” her
mom Donna Dietrich said. “ Her dad and I just
drove her around.”
Kristy is a 2003 graduate of Tulpehocken High
School. She will attend Penn State starting at the
end of the month for animal sciences and all her
premiums go into the savings account to pay for
college.
Eleven-year-old Shelby Rarick, of Fleetwood,
likes to raise sheep, but she fared very well at the
steer show.
Shelby’s Main Anjou cross steer, Alimoe, is re
serve grand champion market steer and her Sim
mental Felicity earned supreme champion female
at the 2003 Beef Show. Shelby lives on a beef farm
in Fleetwood.
This is Dietrich’s last year showing with 4-H,
but she still has Allentown and Oley fairs left with
Who. Then she will sell him at the roundup in
September.
“It is going to be hard,” Dietrich said. “I guess it
never is easy.”
