of federal, state, and non-governmental
agencies that provides generous cost-share
and annual rental payments for landown
ers to install a wide variety of conservation
practices.
Landowners who enroll have many op
tions ranging from stream bank fencing to
conservation cover for highly erodible
land.
The expanded CREP builds on the suc
cess of the highly popular existing CREP
and more than doubles the list of eligible
Pennsylvania counties from 20 to 43.
The expanded CREP is authorized to
enroll up to 200,000 acres in conservation
practices and will bring more than $3OO
million in federal and state funding to
Pennsylvania farmers making CREP the
single largest conservation initiative in
Pennsylvania.
“This year’s Ag Progress Days features
the announcement of a doubling in scale
of CREP. For every dollar Pennsylvania
invests, CREP will leverage $5 or more in
federal funding for implementing conser
vation practices that promote clean
streams, soil conservation and improved
wildlife habitat,” said Dave Wise, for
Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
“The expansion of this program,” Wise
said, “holds enormous potential for
achieving marked gains in resource con
servation and will provide much needed
assistance for many cash-tight farm opera
tions.”
Formal signup is slated to begin Sep
tember 2003. Waiting lists already include
hundreds of farmers in the newly added
counties.
Details of CREP will be presented at 10
a.m. in the Ag Alumni Pavilion and in the
Conservation & Education Tent at 11 a.m.
on Tuesday, Aug. 19, and Thursday, Aug.
21, and continuously at the CREP booth.
Lebanon County 4-H
Poultry Club
Lebanon County has a new 4-H poultry
club designed to encourage maturity and
leadership through the raising and showing
of poultry.
The club is lead by Lisa Spitler of Denver
and Jeanne Griswold of Newmanstown.
The meetings are conducted in the Kleinfel
tersville area and are open to poultry en
thusiasts between the ages of 8 and 18 in
the Lancaster, Lebanon, and Berks coun
ties.
Club members have the opportunity to
learn about their poultry through meetings,
presentations, field trips, and hands-on ac
tivities. One such field trip is planned for a
poultry show and sale in York.
Anyone interested in becoming a member
or volunteering, call (717) 335-0541 or (717)
