Maryland, Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Quizzers Are Tops In Nation WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. The Holstein Foundation hosted its annual competitions for over 400 youth at the 2003 National Junior Holstein Convention. This year marked the 24th an nual Holstein Dairy Bowl con test. Thirty-three teams showed their dairy knowledge and quick ness on the buzzer while vying for the national title. Final teams were decided through preliminary rounds. Un defeated Maryland faced Penn sylvania in the junior division. Pennsylvania beat Maryland in the first round, so a rematch took place, and Maryland captured the junior championship. Maryland team members were Donald King, Pamela King, Cur tis Rhoderick, and Davis Schwartzbeck, coached by Lisa Schwartzbeck. The Pennsylvania team in cluded members Chris Blauch, Austin Copenhaver, Elizabeth Smith, and Brenden Hoover, coached by Duane Nolt. The team from Wisconsin claimed the national champion ship in the senior division, fol lowed by the team from New York. New York senior team mem bers were Bret Bossard, Ryan Dennis, Michael Dobell, and Jackie Pioetz, coached by Linda Stebbins. New this year, awards were presented for the top three exam scores in both the junior and sen ior divisions. Kristine Buffa, New Jersey, and Ryan Dennis, New York, had top scores in the junior and senior divisions, respectively. Dairy Jeopardy contestants demonstrated their dairy knowl edge and ability to think on their feet while wagering their way to the top in the Holstein Founda tion’s fourth annual event. In the junior division (ages 9-11), Matt Henkes of lowa placed first, fol lowed by Austin Schwartzbeck of Maryland. Saturday, August,l6,2oo3, Ag Progress SectotvE47 Derr, Liggett Are New National Guernsey Royalty Pennsylvania Dairy Bowl Teams Excel HUDSON, Wis. Guernsey royalty for 2003 was crowned during the recent national convention of the American Guernsey Association here. Amanda Derr, the 20-year-old daughter of Tom and Kathy Derr of Carey, Ohio, was chosen as the 2003 National Guernsey Queen. Derr attends the University of Findlay, studying pre-vet and hopes to at tend veterinary school in the future. Derr is an integral part of the work force on her family farm, Mona Lous Farm, where they milk 35 registered Guernseys. Amanda has been very active in Guernsey youth programs both nationally and in Ohio, and this year she also won the National Guernsey Youth Public Speaking Contest Senior Division. The 2003 National Guernsey Princess is Amy Liggett, 19, of Besse mer. She is the daughter of Debra and David Liggett. Her grandfather and uncles own and operate Trotacre Farm in Enon Valley. Liggett has held many leadership positions with the Pennsylvania Junior Guernsey Breeders’ Association and won the intermediate divi sion of the National Guernsey Youth Public Speaking Contest in 2000. She has been showing and working on the family farm since 1992. Liggett attends Youngstown State University where she is majoring in musical performance. Her goal is to become an opera singer. Derr and Liggett will attend numerous dairy events in the upcoming year, promoting the golden breed, Guernseys. Pennsylvania dominated the dairy bowl com petitions this year. The junior team of Sarah and Spencer Weimer, Colin Sollenberger, and Cas sandra Musser defeated the team from Illinois in the final round. In the senior division, the Penn sylvania team of Jeff and Chip Ansell, Kevin Sollenberger, and Doug Morrow won out over the New England team. Six teams competed in the junior division and five teams battled in the senior division. Amy Liggett of Bessemer is the 2003 National Guernsey Princess.
