These college-bound superstars were honored by Summer Sand ers, host of “NBA Inside Stuff,” and Super Bowl Champion quar terback Brad Johnson of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, at a spe cial ceremony at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex I '’, where they were inducted into the Milk House’s SAMMY Hall of Fame. In addition to spending the weekend in Orlando in June with the other SAMMY award recipients, Obolensky and Wolfe each re ceived a $7,500 scholarship and a spot in a special milk mustache ad that ran in USA Today and feature issues of Sports Il lustrated and ESPN magazine. A panel of Milk Natalia Obolensky Mustache athletes, including Jason Kidd, Marion Jones, Mat Hoffman, Mia Hamm, Pete Sam pras, and Tony Hawk selected this year’s SAMMY winners. The SAMMY program has awarded more than $1 million in college scholarships in the past six years. Obolensky graduated at the top of her class from Law renceville School, was a student council representative, class rep resentative and newspaper staff member. She was also named to the All-State team in cross 50) country and track. Between school and sports, Obolensky still finds time to volunteer teaching Haitian immigrants to speak English. “I’m honored to receive this award because it is such a whole award, integrating 221 Jalyn Drive • New Holland, Pa 17557 • 717/355-0779 Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 9, 2003-B7 Jessica Wolfe athletics, academics, and com munity service,” Obolensky said. “It recognizes me not just as a scholar or an athlete or leader in the community, but as a whole person.” Wolfe was ranked in the top 1 percent of her class at Bishop Ire ton High School and was a mem ber of the National Honor Socie ty, French Honor Society, and class treasurer. Her sports activi ties included track, cross country, indoor track, and basketball, and twice she was named as Alexan dria City Athlete of the Year in cross-country. She volunteers in the Arlington Hospital maternity ward. “This award is a recognition of all the hard work I’ve put into all my academics and athletics in high school,” Wolfe said. “This award is important to me because it incorporates my achievements with something I love to do, drink milk!” While recent research shows that milk consumption among teens is up for the second year in a row, many teens still swap milk for less nutritious beverages. With efforts like the annual SAMMY program, product inno vation, teen-targeted advertising, and partnerships with teen favor ites like MTV and Rolling Stone, the milk industry hopes to con tinue milk’s momentum amongst this status-conscious crowd. “SAMMY winners are role models for other teens because they understand that academics, athletics, and good health are keys to success,” said Kurt Graetzer, CEO of the Milk Mus tache Campaign, which sponsors the scholarship program.
