CATTLE: Compared to Thursday, slaughter
steers sold mostly steady, instances firmer The
supply included some well-fed stock, especially
on Tuesday when high Choice and Prime steers
sold for as high as 87.00-89.00; even the average
Choice cattle are trading in the 80.00-83.00
range. You won't hear a lot of Producers com
plaining of the market as they are receiving
nearly 20.00 more per hundred than they were
at this time a year ago. However, packers are
none to thrilled to be shelling out around
1100.00-1250.00 per head for the good kind.
And, the market doesn't show very many signs
of weakening as the Canadian border remains
dosed to all dressed and live beef products. This
is very apparent in the futures markets as live
cattle contracts from current to the winter
months are trading at 76.00 or better, even after
some or better losses on Tuesday; with the cur
rent August contract at 78.00. Meat markets are
also on the rise, much like they were the last
time live cattle prices got into the 80.00 range;
with the light Choice cutout 1.90 higher on
Tuesday at 138.60 with heavy Choice carcasses
worth 138.60 after a 1.45 increase; the Choice
cutout is over 7.00 higher than this time a week
ago.
Slaughter Holstein steers sold fully steady on
Tuesday, with a small test of slaughter heifers
trending near steady as well Fleshier (65-80
percent lean) slaughter cows sold 1.00-150
lower, with sales up to 2.00 lower Lean slaugh
ter cows sold weak to 150 lower Slaughter
bulls sold near steady on the few that were com
parable. The two-day run included 292 steers,
33 heifers, 357 cows, 18 bulls, with 20 head of
feeder cattle.

Compared to Tuesday, a good run of high Choice and
Prime slaughter steers sold steady to 1.00 higher. The
bulk of the Choice supply sold mostly steady through
the majority of the sale, with late sales trending up to
1.00 lower Select and low Choice steers sold weak to
100 lower with trade activity never really picking up
on the lower quality stock; especially when compared
to Che active market early in the week. However, the
quality of the supply is noticeably higher late in the
week as there are still several farmer/fecders hauling
finished steers to town that any high Choice and Prime
buyer would like to have in his pen, with the higher
quality cattle m heavier supply and demand earlier in
the Thursday sale as several cuts sold up to 85 85
Also, one must remember that a steady market is not a
bad thing when prices are as good as they are now, as
even a slightly weaker market will still leave the bulk
of the steers in the 8000 money Holstein slaughter
steers sold mostly steady, instances weaker on a good
run that was comprised primarily of Select and low
Choice cattle The slaughter heifer run was to light to
test Fleshier (65-80 percent lean) cows sold 50-100

sold 2 00-3.00 higher in continued good demand. How
ever, the Number Two and Three calves did note fare
near as well as they did In the early week run Number
Two graded bulls sold 10.00-60.00 lower, with the
Number Three supply trending sharply lower. Demand
remains relatively good for the higher quality calves as
finished prices remain very good However, even with
dressed prices at the 300.00 barrier, producers are still
keeping a close eye on the Canadian border and the
rising costs of feed ingredients, as most producers
know the opening of the border or skyrocketing ingre
dient costs could quickly reduce any profit* they have
enjoyed over the past couple of months. An uneven
supply of Holstein heifers sold with a lower undertone,
although the quality was a lot plainer than the Tues
day run The PA Department of Agriculture graded
613 head of bull calves for the graded sale, with an esti
