Chester County 4-H’ers Use Sale Earnings For Education
NICKILEFEVER
Special Correspondent
HONEY BROOK (Chester
Co.) Eliza Walton and Tom
Marsh, two Chester County
4-H’ers, look forward to starting
their freshman year as animal
science majors at Penn State Uni
versity at the end of the month.
They don’t look forward to
using their hard-earned money to
pay for it, but they will.
“All the money I have right
now is going toward paying for
college,” 18-year-old Marsh said.
The Chester County 4-H Live
stock Sale at the Romano 4-H
Center was the last for Walton
and Marsh.
Walton’s Angus steers Stormy
and Fluffy won grand champion
and reserve grand champion
market steer, respectively.
“I am so proud of Stormy,” the
18-year-old said. Stormy, a
1,192-pound Angus steer, was
homebred on the Walton family’s
60-head beef farm in Kennett
Square. Hoss’s Steak and Sea
house purchased the steer for
$2,622.40.
Fuzzy, the 1,172-pound Angus
steer, was sold to Kenny Beiler,
representing Hoober Inc., Inter
course, for $1,406.40.
This is Walton’s seventh year
showing. She said she wouldn’t
miss the steers.
“They were nice steers, but I’ll
get new ones next year,” she said.
Marsh, 18, competed against
50 others. He is in his 12th year
showing. Marsh said he is sad he
will watch from the sidelines next
year.
His 248-pound grand champi
on market swine, who placed
over 130 other hogs, sold to Hat
field for $744. Marsh will leave
his family’s four-acre crop farm
in Honey Brook with hopes of be
coming an extension agent.
Other show champions include
Julia Howe, 18, of Downingtown;
Levi Wensel, 10, of Morgantown;
and Laura Maguire, 13, of Coat-
Seville.
Howe, who lives on a turkey
farm, will save her profit or use it
for a mission trip to Gutemala.
