The paper was held together
by what Aldorasi calls the “Vel

bond stayed interlocked, and was
strong even wet. The fibers, like
felt from the screen in a clothes
dryer, were pulled from a tray
strainer, laid on wool sheets,
pressed, and dried.

Thomas A. voices of experience'
Rags were used to provide the
fiber. But making paper was
tough during the Revolutionary
War, when “people were wearing
their rags, not making paper out
of them,” said Aldorasi.
Any excess paper was used as
either to hold gunpowder or in
wadding for rifles. “Without a
wad of paper, you couldn’t fight
a war,” he said.
Aldorasi told the tale about a
wagonload of books headed to
Ephrata at one time to be bound.
The books were the “Fox’s Book
of Martyrs,” and the martyrs be-
came “twice Martyrs,” noted Al
dorasi, because the rebels needed
paper, a real expensive commodi
ty. They stole the load.
Aldorasi, dressed in common
18th century garb, demonstrated
the mobile paper press unit with
the basics a vat, a screen, and a
press.
Other demonstrations at the
Cloister included the art of Frak
tur. Demonstrator Claressa Resh
noted how much time was spent
in replicating, by hand, certain
items.
The members of the Cloister
wrote with quill pens, using most
ly goose quill, though they could
“write with any kind of feather,”
she said. The quills were kept
sharpened by a pen knife.
Ink came primarily from sub
stance collected out of oak galls,
a growth on oak leaves. The ma
terial inside the gall was scraped
out (sometimes the whole gall
was just ground up) and mixed
with a blue powder called coppe
ras. The material was mixed with
tannic acid and gum arabic, a
thickening agent. This was all
mixed with vinegar and boiled.

calligrapher, demonstrated hand
writing by quill. Those who at
tended could hand-letter, copying
from style sheets, or just creating
their own styles on paper.
Demonstrator Michael Show
alter, museum educator, showed
how early bookbinding was done.
Pages were bound with linen
thread by signature (a group of
pages). Cloister members, work
ing by hand, bound their own
school notebooks, covering them
with wallpaper.
One book on hand provided
detail on the sewn signatures on
the spine. That volume was the
“Marburger Song Book,” printed
in 1781.
Showalter noted that the Clois
ter Museum plans several dem
onstrations, part of a series the
second Sunday of every month
through October. That includes
work from Cloister members
from 300 years at the site.
For more information, contact
Showalter at (717) 733-6600. The
Cloister is located just west of
downtown Ephrata on Rt. 322
