Rockingham County Fair Aug. 11-16
GAY BROWNLEE
Virginia Correspondent
HARRISONBURG, Va.
The Market Hog Show at 6:30
p.m., Monday, Aug. 11, will lead
off the 4-H and FFA livestock
shows that are slated for the six
day Rockingham County Fair,
located on Rt. 11 in Rockingham
County just south of the city
limits.
The 2003 event marks the
Rockingham County Fair’s 54th
year.
At 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12,
the Open and Junior Dairy Show
leads off, followed at 3 p.m. by
the 4-H and FFA Market Lamb
Show.
Wednesday, Aug. 13 the 4-H
and FFA Steer Show begins at 9
a.m. The Junior Beef Show starts
at 3 p.m. and the Open Sheep
Show will start at 4 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 14 the Open
Beef and Commercial Heifer
Show will get under way at 8
a.m. At 7 p.m. the dairy depart
ment showing and fitting, dairy
scramble and Pee Wee classes are
scheduled.
The livestock sales on Friday,
Aug. 15, start at 3 p.m. with the
market steers going first. Then at
7 p.m. the market lambs and
market hogs will be sold.
Beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday,
Dairy Market Outlook
(Continued from Page Al 6)
Czechoslovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Russian
Federation, and Ukraine.
Wonder why your price for “other dairy so
lids” is so low? It’s because the wholesale value
of dry whey fell from nearly $0.29 per pound in
2001 to $0.14 per pound today. This is driven by
supply and demand (economists always say
that). Imports so far this year may have contrib
uted a bit to lower prices.
For the first five months of this year, imports
were up for the following products: whey pro
tein concentrates (HTS 350220) up 50 percent,
whey and modified whey imports (HTS 040410)
up 14 percent, lactose (99 percent or more lac
tose) (HTS 170211) up 44 percent, and other
lactose (99 percent or less by weight) (HTS
170219) up 442 percent. This is quite amazing
since 1) we are a major exporter of whey prod
ucts and lactose, and 2) there are no access
(quota) requirements for these products.
Finally, imports of condensed milk were
6,028 metric tons for the first five months of this
year, down 1.8 percent from a year ago. Guess
where 72 percent of this volume came from?
Brazil! Their imports were up 18,023 percent
from the same period a year ago.
