Cattle Calves Sheep Goats
THIS WEEK
LAST WEEK
LAST YEAR
Compared to Thursday, slaughter steers sold
mostly steady. There was some firmness noted
in the Monday run, especially on the lower
Choice and high Select steers. The Tuesday run
was relatively light, but did include a couple lots
of reputation cattle which sold in the mid-80‘s.
The Tuesday demand was only moderate when
compared to the active Monday market when
buyers were paying 80.00 dollars for them no
matter what grade they fell under. The Holstein
market was not tested Monday, however the
Tuesday run trended about steady. The heifer
run was very light, and a trend was not estab
lished. The nearby August live cattle contract at
the Mercantile Exchange is trading at around
77.00, and for that matter live cattle contracts

is extremely feeder friendly. Although, farmer/
feeders are having to lay out a pretty penny to
put feeders back in, especially if they're using
the heavier 700-900 pounders; with the feeder
cattle futures in the 90.00 money through Octo
ber. Slaughter cows sold 1.00 to 2.00 lower on
one of the poorest quality runs of the season.
However, bidding activity and buyer attention
was high on very scarce higher quality offerings
with a high selling individual up to S7.SO.

calves suitable for special-fed veal bams sold
mostly 20.00 higher, with instances of up to
30.00 higher on Graded Number 1 and 2 calves.
While Graded Number 3 calves sold steady to
5.00 lower. Good demand and bidding activity
was noticed on Graded Number 1 and 2 bull
calves weighing over 85 lbs. Milder tempera-
hires and reduced humidity in the area made
for more attractive packages of graded calves.
Demand was notably lighter for lower quality
calves with the majority going directly to kill
markets instead of sifting pens and bams. In
meat market on Tuesday, Northeast special fed
veal traded sharply higher, mostly
255.00- few lots at higher levels on very
good demand and very light offerings. Holstein
heifer calves sold steady to weak, with the ma
jority of the demand noticed on Graded heifer
