CATTLE CALVES
THIS WEEK 2171 2014
LAST WEEK 2228 2230
LAST YEAR 2138 • 2643
Compared to last week's closing prices,
slaughter steers opened up the week trading
with a weaker undertone only to trade 1.00-2.00
higher late in the week. However, there were a
lot of national factors that were supportive of
the local market at the end of the week that the
Tuesday run was not able to lean on. For in
stance, the Western feeders moved the bulk of
their live steers a full 3.00 higher this week from
76.00-78.00. The Board was also extremely sup
portive by weeks end as the current July con
tract gained 3.00 over Wednesday and Thurs-

day due to two consecutive limit-up rallies; to
close at 78.30. The chairs surrounding the ring
at the New Holland auction on Thursday
should have had seatbelts as trading was veiy
active on a very nice run of high Choice and
Prime cattle. It was a few months ago when fat
cattle prices in Lancaster County set all time re
cords as prices were reported as high as 90.00,
and just when you think the summer slump is
finally going to set in, prices spike sharply high
er again. At the Thursday run packages of high
Choice and Prime steers were bringing from
83.00-85.00; with fancy singles up to 88.00.
Needless-to-say, farmer feeders are once again
looking at very healthy profits. Holstein steers
sold with a weaker tone early in the week, with
late week prices 1.00 higher. Slaughter heifers
were hard to come by this week, with a trend
never established. Slaughter cows sold as much
as 3.00 lower through mid-week, with cow
prices on Thursday 2.00-3.00 higher. Slaughter
bulls followed the same path, trending weaker
until Thursday, when prices were 2.00 higher.
The reported supply this week in Lancaster
County included 815 head of slaughter steers,
74 head of slaughter heifers, 1032 head of
slaughter cows, 143 head of slaughter bulls, and
107 head of feeder cattle.

Holstein bull calves suitable for special-fed veal

of the decline noted on the middle weight
(95-115 lbs) bull calves as they dropped as much
as 50.00. Graded Number 3 bull calf prices have
leveled off for the most part since their addition
earlier in the month, as the bulk of the Number
3‘s arc bringing kill prices. Holstein heifer
calves sold steady to Arm early in the week, and
held their momentum through late week as
prices reached 530.00. Northeast veal profits re
main very good, with local feeders reporting
dressed prices as high as 300.00. The PA De
partment of Agriculture graded 1267 head of
heifer and bull calves at the two graded sales in
Lancaster County this week, compared to 1391
