show has lots of quality,” said
Judge Dana Brown, Strasburg.
Grand champion honors in
both the open and 4-H competi
tions went to a 2-year-old named
Cotton owned by Melissa Huff, 9.
Brown said he selected Cotton
because she had the best udder.
The Huff name is not new to the
winning circle. Melissa’s parents
Patty and Brian Huff, Notting
ham, are well known Jersey
breeders. Patty has been showing
and winning since she was a little
girl and has passed on her love for
it to her daughter. Melissa owns
eight of the family’s 75 head from
Shywood Farm, Nottingham.
The reserve champion overall
went to the junior champion,
dubbed “most stylish” by Brown.
The reserve, an intermediate calf,
is owned by Meredith Bailey,
Chester County dairy princess,
who helps with the family's
Amber Hallowell, 17, shows Elvira, an intermediate
yearling that claimed the title of Guernsey Junior Champi
on at Kimberton Community Fair. It’s the second year in a
row that Amber claimed the grand champion title in the
Junior Guernsey Show at Kimberton. Amber, daughter of
Wayne and Sue Hallowell, Bechtelsviile, is the Berks
County Dairy Princess, and owns 22 dairy animals of the
family’s 45 milking cows. Among her 22 head are Guern
seys, Red and White, Lineback, and Holsteins. The Guern
sey competition was conducted Tuesday evening.
For $3, fairgoers could have photos taken with Fireball,
a Red and White Holstein calf, owned by Robert Hershey,
13. Chester County 4-H’ers took turns bringing their ani
mals to the photo spot during Kimberton Community Fair,
July 21-26. “It’s a fundraiser for the club,” Hershey said.
He is the son of Duane and Marilyn Hershey, Cochranville.
The photo opportunity delighted youngsters who seldom
have the opportunity to get up close to farm animals.
200-head herd,
The Sollenbergers are another
family carrying on the dairy tradi
tion. Three generations gathered
to help with a string of 22 from
their herd of 70 from French
Creek Farm.
Grandfather Clyde Scheib
started showing in 1961. He said,
“Now I come to visit and they
(grandchildren and daughter) do
all the work.”
His daughter Holly spread her
passion for dairying to her chil
dren. Daughter Julie is a former
Pennsylvania Fair Queen and Na
tional Guernsey Queen. Siblings,
Kevin, 17; Colin, 14; and Kyle, 9,
raise and show animals from
Guernsey, Jersey, Holstein, and
Lineback breeds. In the Guernsey
open show, they exhibited the
grand and reserve champions.
Some of the breed competitions
had not been conducted by
presstime.
Three generations of the Soilenberger family gather with their grand champion and
reserve champion Guernseys at Kimberton Community Fair's open show. The Sollen
bergers brought 22 head, a mixture of Guernseys, Jerseys, Holsteins, and Linebacks to
ringside. From left, Julie, former Pennsylvania fair queen and National Guernsey queen;
her mother Holly, brothers Kevin, 17; Kyle, 9; Colin, 14, and Grandfather Clyde Scheib.
Judge Dana Brown and Chester County
Dairy Ambassador Rebecca Bailey con
gratulate winners in Jersey competition at
Kimberton. From left, Melissa Huff with
the senior champion and grand champion
overall, and Meredith Bailey with the jun
ior champion and reserve grand champion
overall.
