Compared to Thursday, Lean slaughter cows
sold steady to mostly .50 lower. Breaking and
Boning cows sold 1.00-3.00 lower as the bulk of
the fleshier cows were weighing up pretty full,
and buyer interest was very light. The cow car
cass cutout value was up .02 on Monday; how
ever it has a little ways to go to make up for the
2.00 it lost over the past week. Slaughter bulls
sold with a lower undertone on a light run. The
cattle supply included 152 head of slaughter
cows and 26 head slaughter bulls. All cattle and
sheep quotes are by the hundred weight.

Compared to Thursday, slaughter steers sold
with a weaker undertone. The quality of the run
was mixed, but did include a few cuts of well
fed steers. However, since the Thursday run
was comprised of mostly high Choice and
Prime cattle, the top-end of the early week mar
ket was not fully tested. The local finished mar
ket remains extremely good, as buyers are still
willing to pay in the low 80‘s for the right kind.
There is no concrete reason that is allowing
prices to stay at such a bullish level, but as long

the U.S. posted gains this week, from the July
live cattle contract at the CME gaining 3.00
over the past two days to close at 78.30 on
Thursday, to the Western cattle feeders manag
ing to move their cattle 3.00 higher from
76.00-78.00. While these markets do not have
an overwhelming effect on the Northeastern
market, it is still nice to see cattle feeders and
packers using black ink on their closeouts no
matter what state you call home. The local Hol
stein steer market was also very good on Thurs
day, as prices were a full 1.00 higher than Tues
day. The slaughter heifer runs have been light
all week, and a trend was never established.
Fleshier (65- 80 percent lean) slaughter cows
sold 2.00-3.00 higher, with select sales up to
4.00 higher. Lean slaughter cows sold 2.00 high
er. Late week cow demand was very good, but
was not supported at all by a boneless beef mar
ket that was reported over 1.00 lower on Thurs
day. Slaughter bulls sold 2.00 higher on a run
that included nearly 100 head. The supply in
cluded 519 head of slaughter steers, 529 slaugh
ter cows, 38 slaughter heifers, 98 slaughter
