Eastern Cornbelt Direct Feeder Cattle
Summary Illinois, Indiana, Michigan,
and Ohio: Compared to last week, feeder
cattle were weak to 2.00 lower in a light
market test. Demand was light. Trading
activity was very slow. Reported sales
consisted of about 44% beef steers, 36%
heifers and 20% Holstein steers. Approxi
mately 80% of the cattle marketed this
week weighed over 600 Ibs.Confirmed
sales 500 this week, 900 last week and 250
last year.
FEEDER STEERS: Medium and
Large 1-2: load lot 800 lbs 86.50; load lot
990 lbs 74.00.
HOLSTEIN STEERS: Medium and
Large 3-4: load lot 840 lbs 70.00.
FEEDER HEIFERS: Medium and
Large 1-2; 550-675 lbs 89.00-91.00.

YARDS, Weekly Cattle Summary
Compared to last week: Feeder cattle and
calves steady to 2.00 higher. Demand con
tinues good for feeders. Calf demand
good despite hot dry weather. Northern
feedtots active buyers of heavy calves for
grow lots. The trade was impressed with
cattle on feed June marketing’s and last
week’s strong feedlot movement. Nearby
August-October Choice steer futures re
acted .45-.6S up Monday. High pressure
system continues to bake Oklahoma with
highs reaching 110 in parts of the state
during the past week. Over night lows
Sunday night falling only into the low
90’s. Slight reprieve moved in with cooler
temps but still no rain.
Receipts this week 11,800; last week
14,564; last year 6,663. Supply consisted
of 77% over 600 lbs; 18% calves; 5% cows
and bulls. Heifers comprised 39% of feed
er & calf supply.

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter
market in the United States for feedlots
with capacity of 1,000 or more head total
ed 9.92 million head on July 1, 2003. The
inventory was 5 percent below July 1,
2002 and 10 percent below July 1,2001.
The inventory included 6.11 million
steers and steer calves, down 5 percent
from the previous year. This group ac
counted for 62 percent of the total inven
tory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted
for 3.75 million head, down 5 percent
from 2002.
Placements in feedlots during June to
taled 1.68 million, 2 percent above 2002
but 14 percent below 2001. Net
placements were 1.62 million.
During June, placements of cattle and
calves weighing less than 600 pounds
were 374,000, 600-699 pounds were
361,000, 700-799 pounds were 483,000,
and 800 pounds and greater were 464,000.

Weekly Meat Production Under Federal Inspection
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 18 - (USDA-NASS) - Total red meat pro
duction under federal inspection for the week ending Saturday, July 19,
was estimated at 918.5 million lbs, according to the USDA's Agricultural
Marketing Service. This was 1.0 percent higher than a week ago and 2.2
percent higher than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year
to date was 0.2 percent lower compared to the previous year.
