The American Gelbvieh Associ ation is aggressively seeking calves that qualify for its new tagging program. The AGA’s Smartßuy program works to identify and promote calves with the profitable blend of Gelbvieh and Angus genetics (Smart Cross calves). Smart Cross calves must be sired by a registered Gelbvieh, Balancer or Gelbvieh-Angus hybrid bull and out of an Angus based cow (red or black). Advisory committees and sub committees then meet again in July to prepare recommenda tions for specific program pro posals, which then are considered by the Operating Committee and USDA in Sep tember, before the Oct. 1 begin ning of the fiscal year. In other action this week, the Operating Committee rejected a proposal from the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) to redirect beef checkoff funds pre viously approved for implemen tation expenses associated with beef promotion efforts in South Korea and Japan to pay instead for expansion of those same pro grams. The committee voted 11-6 in favor of the proposal, with three members absent, thus falling one vote short of the required two thirds majority for a vote by the committee to pass.
