Ephrata Cloister Demonstrates
Early Book Arts
EPHRATA (Lancaster Co.)
Have you read a good book late
ly? As you were holding it in your
hands, did you think about how
the book was made? Today, tech
nology allows major publishers to
quickly produce books in great
quantities. Two hundred years
ago, the task was not as easy.
One of the nation’s earliest
publishing centers was located at
the Ephrata Cloister in northern
Lancaster County, where paper
and ink were made from scratch,
printing type was set by hand,
and book binders stitched togeth
er the pages and bound them in
leather covers. Purchasers could
even have their name penned in
side the book in the beautiful
Germanic calligraphy called
Frakturschriften. To discover
more about the process used for
publishing in the past, the Ephra
ta Cloister presents the special

Press” on Sunday, July 13 from
noon to 5 p.m. The day-long dem
onstrations of papermaking,
printing, book binding, and calli
graphy are included with admis
sion to the historic site.
“Two hundred and fifty-five
years ago Ephrata’s members
were in the midst of producing
the largest book published in the
American colonies, and everyone
plays some role in the work,” said
Toni Collins, historic site admin
istrator. The book, the “Martyrs
Mirror,” tells the stories of early
Christian and Anabaptist mar
tyrs, and was produced for the
Mennonite congregations in
Pennsylvania. The 1,500 page
book employed 15 of the Brothers
for three years in its production,
some in the paper mill, others at
the printing press.
