Laura Sheffer was another stu dent who shared what she and others gained from the institute. “One important thing scholars received from MAAC was inspi ration to never give up and follow your dreams,” she said. Laura Grove and Brian Nailor were named this year’s winners of the Jay Irwin Leadership Award. Grove was graduated from Shippensburg High School in June, and is deferring her enroll ment at Penn State this fall in order to serve as the sentinel for the state FFA. Once at college, she plans to study ag business management. She is the daughter of Jeff and Linda Grove. Nailor, Mechanicsburg, will be a senior at Cumberland Valley High School this fall. Beside the usual academic work, Nailor studies culinary arts at Cumber land-Perry Vo-Tech. His parents are Dennis and Joanne Nailor. MAAC and Land O’ lakes Co operative awarded a total of 14 scholarships and eight alternate scholarships to outstanding youth in this year’s program. Tyler Youngs won the Co-op Marketing Award for a poster he designed. The selection was based on clarity, creativity, and neatness. Awards for “Your Viewpoint,” a competition based on quality of opinion on a particular topic, went to Janelle Zimmerman, first place, and Laura Grove. Other scholar recognition in cluded the Walter Z. Loy Award, which went to Kyle Seyfert, top test score, and Ben Schack, best first-year test score. Dick Poorbaugh, a longtime leader at the MAAC Summer In stitute, received a special award for his years of commitment to the cause. Poorbaugh has man aged or otherwise been involved in the program since 1991. “I do this because I believe in this program and young people,” Poorbaugh said in accepting the award.
