by men. An exception was the
earliest known cookbook written
in England in 1747 by Hannah
Glasse. The title was “The Art of
Cookery Made Plain and Easy.”
It contained what the author con
sidered valuable tips for the
young homemaker of that time.
One of the mpost popu
lar, early cookbooks ever
written was “Mrs. Beeton’s
LUNCH
Book Of Household Manage
ment.” It was published in Eng
land in 1861 by Isabella Beeton,
age 2S, and reprinted for several
decades. It was considered the
definitive work on not only Vic
torian cookery for generations,
but a total guide to lifestyles in
that day. There was information
for all of the servants, such as up
stairs-maid etiquette.
There was even an account of
the natural history of the animals
