Cherry Fair has been a tradition in Schaefferstown since the late 1700 s when farmers and their families would come into the village square to sell their cherries and other seasonal pro duce, catch-up on the news, and in general make merry. “Cherries, although they gave a name to the occasion, were by no means the most important feature of it. The fairs were es sentially a scheme for bringing the people of the neighborhood together for merry making,” wrote an early Schaefferstown historian, A.S. Brendle in his 1901 history of the town. “Cher ries, raisins, mintdrops, molasses candy, and other fruit and con fections were sold ... The crowds at the fairs passed the time merri ly in dancing and social games, in which many of the young people participated.
