As you might imagine it took quite a large room to house Jefferson’s collection of more than 1,000 books. By the middle of the 18th cen tury, not only royalty but also wealthy Europeans and Ameri cans boasted the newest status symbol: a library. Designers of the era put their best skills into sometimes tower ing pieces. When they were made of walnut, they were topped with arched curves, and were often treated like architecture. In Geor gian times (1714-17605) there were classical pilasters on the comers of the doors, plus much gilding. By 1750, the Chinoiserie (Oriental) and Gothic look be came popular. An example would be, a massive mahogany break fron bookcase that would com bine fine veneer with Gothic arches of thin strips of wood on the glass doors. An innovation was the hanging bookshelf. It was almost a work of art. In England it might be de signed with ornate fretwork, or, in France, inlaid with tortoise shell veneer. In any instance, shelving pieces followed the fur niture fashions of the time. There were even novelty book storage pieces. One example was a mahogany, revolving Regency book table, with imitation novels to act as book supports. Another unusual item was the traveler’s collapsible bookcase. By the early Victorian period (1830 s), the bookcase-as-fumi ture had become a standard in American and English middle class homes. The style depended on the taste and pocketbook of the owner. CLUES: These days nothing is cheap when it comes to book cases. As ususual what is fashion able is costly. Arts and Crafts style bookcases are fetching big bucks at auction.
