(Continued from Page A 2) CATTLE; Compared to last week, slaughter steers sold weak to 3.00 lower. Early week sales sold near steady as some high quality steers brought up to 88.50 on Monday, with the bulk of the Tuesday run weighing up extremely full, and wus docked from 2.00-5.00. The Thursday run included almost 700 head of steers as local pro ducers continue to send them to town to get in on the current market, as prices are 11.00-14.00 higher than this time a year ago. Most of the cat tle have some nice finirh on them; however, live i weights are well below the norm for the county as the majority are weighing from 1100-1300 lbs; as compared to the usual 1250-1450 lbs. Slaugh ter Holstein steers sold steady to weak, with the mixed heifer runs not tested. Nationally, the western direct feed yards moved live steers bom 77 00-78.00 this week, with prices 2.00-3.00 lower than the prior week. Dressed sales ranged from mostly 123.00-124.00, which is 4.00 lower. Boxed beef cutout values have been on a downhill dope most of the week; with prices for Choice cuts from 2.80-3.50 lower by Thursday. Traders at the t Chicago Mercantile Exchange had no choice but to move contracts lower in the face of a lower fed cattle trade and falling boxed beef values. The June live cattle Contract Is sitting at 73.40 as of Thursday, with mqjor losses on Wednesday as a few nearby months closed down the limit. Local slaughter cows sold 4.00-0.00 lower through the first half of the week, with good late week de mand allowing prices to trade steady to 2.00 higher, even in the face of a sharply lower cutter ►cow cutout on Thursday. Slaughter bulls sold with a lower undertone for the week. No matter what type of livestock a producer prefers, wheth er it be feeding veal calves or slaughter steers, ifs hard to overlook the concern most of them have about the Canadian border opening. For now, there is no confirmed date for the re-opening of the border to ruminant animals. Many local pro ducers have enjoyed friendly profits over the past few months, especially on their fed cattle, cows, and calves; with many sitting on pins and nee dles wandering what effect the re-opening will f have on local prices as they try to figure out a Office Closed July 4 On Friday, July 4, Lancaster Farming office is closed.
