OKLAHOMA NATIONAL STOCK
YARDS, Weekly Cattle Summary
Compared to last major test two weeks
ago: Feeder steers and heifers 4.00-6.00
higher. Stockers and calves 1.00-3.00
higher. Demand excellent for the large
run. Very current feedlot conditions,
strong profits throughout the wholesale
cattle and beef complex, and a positive
start to the corn crop are all fueling the
strong demand for feeder cattle. Flesh
conditions of feeders a major plus for buy
ers as wheat bloom is all but gone and
premium grass flesh more common. Qual
ity average with improved flesh condi
tions. Feeder cattle in slightly thin to
moderate flesh conditions and improved
for buyers. Weigh-ups average.
Compared to last week: Slaughter cows
and bulls weak to 2.00 lower. Packer de
mand still good but off some from robust
demand of last week. Demand for re
placements moderate. Large string of 900
cows from one ranch sold and these stim
ulated interest. Cows were good quality
black and black white face stock cows but
in poor flesh condition. Body condition
score averaging 4 or Cutter-low Cutter
condition. Total of 1215 cows and bulls
sold with 35 percent to packers.
Receipts this week 20,923; last week
2,465; last year 16,648. Supply consisted
of 82% yearlings over 600 lbs; 12% calves;
6% cows and bulls. Heifers comprised
45% of feeder and calf supply.

NATIONAL FEEDER & STOCKER
CATTLE SUMMARY - Week Ending
May 30 Total Receipts: 277,100, last
week 289,100; last year 204,600. Direct:
83,300, last week 55,000, last year 54,100.
Video/Intemet; 31,300, last week 22,700,
last year none. Auctions: 162,500, last
week 211,400, last year 150,500. This
week’s reported auction volume included
44 percent over 600 lbs and 46 percent
heifers.
Compared to last week, feeder cattle
auction receipts were light as most Mon
day sales were closed for Memorial Day.
However, mid to late-week auctions saw
active trading and prices that ranged
from firm to 5.00 higher as buyers
struggled for numbers on this holiday
week. Southeastern calf markets trended
steady to 3.00 higher and direct sales in
the Plains states were called steady to
1.00 higher. There was a noticeable in
crease in early-fall contracting, especially
in Kansas, but this is expected to taper off
until later this summer as buyers are re
luctant at current levels and sellers have
dollar signs for eyes.
All classes of cattle and beef products
are at or near record price levels as de
mand outweighs supply. Americans evi
dently scarfed down plenty of hamburg
ers and steaks over the Memorial Day
Weekend, despite rainy weather along the
Eastern Seaboard. Boxed beef cut-out val
ues continue to post all-time highs with
heavy Choice carcasses ending the week
at 149.99, which compares to 117.32 last
year. Also this week, major packers pur
chased a whopping 341,000 head through
Friday morning from 80.00-81.00 live and
mostly 128.00 in the beef. Feeder markets
continue to follow suit as several sale
barns in the Northern Plains quoted 7
weight steers up to 90.00, not to mention
a string in Kearney, Nebraska with a fa
vorable weigh-up that brought 92.35. The
only foreseeable bump in the road to these
record quotes is the lifting of the ban on
Canadian cattle and beef imports. Offi
cials are already talking about opening
the border to veal and certain muscle cuts
from younger cattle. Hopefully the media
will be as kind to the industry when im
porting resumes as they were when the
positive case of BSE was confirmed. Cat
tle producers along the northern tier of
the United States are in no hurry to open
the border, as they have been cashing-in
on slaughter cow prices in the high 50s.
Lancaster County Pennsylvania report
ed high Choice and Prime steers as high
as 89.00 and locals are looking into con
verting armored cars into cattle trucks.
