Compared to Thursday, Lean slaughter
cows sold steady to .50 lower. However,
Breaking and Boning cows sold 1.00-3.00
lower as buyer demand was light. The
quality of the run could have been a fac
tor in the lower prices, as the majority of
the run was not as fancy as Thursday's.
Slaughter bulls sold 2.00-3.00 higher as
the supply was comprised of some very
nice stock. The cattle supply included 61
percent cows, with 13 percent, slaughter
bulls.

high Choice and Pnme supply trading .50

wow even the seasoned cattle buyers as
there were tat steers that sold up to 90.00.
It is hard to imagine a packer being able
to cut enough meat out of a
1250.00-1300.00 steer to pay the bills, but
that is the situation local buyers are faced
with as pnces contmue to soar. The quali
ty of the two-day run was very nice, and
even with the inclement weather steers
are weighing up good. Slaughter Holstein
steers sold steady, instances weaker.
There were not enough slaughter heifers
for a market test. Lean slaughter cows
sold fully 1.00 lower, with sales up to 2.00
lower at times. Breaking and Boning cows
sold fully 4.00 lower when compared to
Thursday's very active market. Buyer at
tendance was lighter at the Tuesday run
as a few packers are taking a back seat
for a while to try and wait out the current
high market; they could be on to some
thing if the border opens and Canadian
cows flood the U.S. market.
Slaughter bulls sold mostly steady on a
light test. The two-day run included 414
steers, 42 heifers, 363 cows, 26 bulls, with
18 head of feeder cattle.

special-fed veal barns sold sharply lower
in fairly inactive trading. Prices were

are beginning to show concern about Can
ada sending fat calves into the U.S., as
talks are underway to import calves in the
near future. The PA Department of Ag

the graded sale, with around 92 percent of

Compared to Tuesday, slaughter steers sold
fully 2.00-3.00 lower, with sporadic sales up to
4.00 lower throughout the day. The run in
cluded some fancy cattle; the only problem was
there were too many. When the supply doubles
from one week to the next there are usually
bound to be problems. This was the case on
Thursday as nearly 900 head of steers were on
offer, compared to 43S last week, which led to
the supply outweighing the demand. The runs
have been pretty light over the past week and a
half, with prices for Prime steers as high as
89.00 last Thursday and up to 90 00 during the
Monday and Tuesday runs of this week, and it
was pretty obvious producers were chomping at
the bit to get in on the high market as there was
a line of trucks a half mile long waiting to un
load early Thursday morning in New Holland.
However, even with a lower market no one is
hanging their heads too low as this time a year
ago prices for high Choice and Prime steers
were from mostly 68.00-72.00, with Choice
steers bringing from 67.00-69.00. Holstein steers
sold 1.00-2.00 lower, with not enough slaughter
heifers early in the week to test the late week
run. Due to the late start, slaughter cows were
not fully tested early. However, opening sales of
all classes were weak to 2.00 lower. Slaughter
bulls sold with a lower undertone. The supply
included 882 head of slaughter steers, 567 cows,
111 heifers, 74 bulls, with 206 head of feeder
cattle.
