Penn State Creamery Milk Bottles
(Continued from Page 822)
added, and, for the first time, collec
tors looking for a complete set of
University Creamery milk bottles
needed four (two-quart, quart, pint
and half-pint) instead of the tradi
tional three.
Retail delivery route sales of milk
were discontinued in 1958. Glass
bottles on hand continued to be
used for milk sold in the Creamery
salesroom until about 1960 as glass
was gradually replaced by waxed
cardboard containers. Therefore,
Penn State University Creamery
milk bottles, in use for less than
seven years, are harder to find than
some of the Penn State College
Creamery bottles that date back to
the early 1900 s.
There’s good news, however, re
garding Penn State Milk bottles.
With the arrival of the new millen
nium in year 2000, the Penn Dairy
men’s Club (an alumni group in the
Department of Dairy and Animal
Sciences) launched a new Penn
State milk bottle tradition by selling
half-pint milk bottles as a fund-rais
ing project.
The 2000 edition has a generic
barn scene in blue and green. All
subsequent editions have continued
with the blue and green color. The
second edition in 2001 carries a
drawing of the Penn State Agricul
tural Arena. For the 2002 third edi
tion, none other than the University
Creamery is depicted. The “old”
Penn State Dairy Barns adorn the
fourth edition issues in 2003.

What will appear on these bottles
in 2004? It’s an especially signifi
cant year the 100th anniversary
of Patterson Building where the
first Penn State glass milk bottle
began a century of history; the
twenty-fifth anniversary of the Penn
State Dairymen’s Club; and the
fifth anniversary of the Dairymen’s
Club milk bottle.
Whatever image is chosen for the
fifth edition in 2004, there will be no
lack of worthy ideas coming from a
century of rich history involving
Penn State and the formerly plain
old common glass milk bottle.
This article describes Penn State
College Creamery milk bottles with
five different embossed logos used
circa 1904-1943. There are six dif
ferent pyroglazed designs for Col
lege Creamery bottles used from
1937 until 1953. One pyroglazed de
sign was used for University
Creamery bottles during the years
1954-1960.
More than five years of searching
have gone into the personal collec
tion discussed. Years indicated are
taken from bottles in this collection.
It is believed that all designs have
been found, but other logos and
years may exist. Anyone with in
formation, contact Darwin G.
Braund, volunteer curator Pasto
