NATIONAL SLAUGHTER CAT
TLE SUMMARY - Week Ending May
23: Slaughter cattle trade moderately
tested in the north sales thus far were
2.00 lower on live and dressed basis.
Trading at a near standstill in southern
plains with sellers taking wait-and-see
posture to lower packer bids. Sellers en
couraged by reduction in supply caused
by Canadian border closing and appar
ent continued strong beef demand.
Last Friday’s Cattle On Feed’s large
placement numbers for April sent some
negative vibrations through the trading
complex as total numbers by next month
could possibly be even with a year ago
June 1 numbers. To the positive side car
cass weights are low creating less ton
nage for equal kill numbers to last year.
Beef demand is considered positive to
last year. Out front CME Live Cattle fu
tures continue at apparent discounts to
cash which should continue to pull cattle
ahead of projected marketing dates.
Boxed beef prices Friday a.m. averaged
134.82 up 1.78 from last Friday and up
8.52 from two weeks ago. Sales of
slaughter cattle on a national basis for
negotiated cash trades were only 79,600
through 10d)0 a.m. Friday. Last week’s
full count was 243,000.
