Compared to Tuesday's higher market.
Choice slaughter steers sold hilly 1.00 lower al
though the biggest losses were noted in the high
Choice and Prime supply as prices were hilly
2.00 lower. Bidding was very sporadic, at times
it was relatively good for the high quality stock,
only to falter when the lower grade cattle came
in the ring; but all-in-all trade activity was well
below average. Thursday's run was being com
pared to a very active market early in the week
where prices were over 88.00 for Prime cattle.
However, in all fairness both the Monday and
Tuesday runs had the advantage of completing
before news of BSE (mad cow disease) rocked
the red meat industry. Therefore, when you
take in consideration the dark cloud that the in
dustry is being overcast by, an 80.00+ market is
something to praise. There are definitely some
differences of opinion to the BSE case in Cana
da, as some local producers feel it will boost
local demand as packers will be forced to by
U.S. cattle to keep their chains full, while others
fear even though the borders are closed con
sumer confidence could dwindle. Unfortunate
ly, only time will tell as we are very near the
grilling season. Compared to the light early
week Holstein run, slaughter Holsteins sold
fully steady with a higher undertone noted on
the higher quality stock. There were not enough
heifers to test the market. Lean slaughter cows
sold fully steady to 1.00 higher, while Breaking
and Boning cows sold up to 2.00 higher. This
increase came after prices were already
1.00-2.00 higher early in week. Bidding was
very active, with buyers in strong attendance.
The quality of the supply was also very good
which lent support as the run reached nearly
500 head. Slaughter bulls sold with a higher un
dertone on a very good run that included over
100 head of very nice bulls. The supply included
631 head of steers, 470 cows, 78 heifers, 112
bulls, with 111 head of feeder cattle.
Note: The New Holland Sales Stable is hold
ing a feeder cattle special on Friday May 23rd
which is set to begin at 6:00 pm.

THIS WEEK

LAST YEAR
Compared to last week, slaughter steers
opened the week up to 1.00 higher, with closing
week prices hilly 1.00-2.00 lower. There were
record-breaking live cattle prices this week in
Lancaster County as Prime steers on Monday
sold at 88.25. Nationally, BSE (mad cow dis
ease) was found in a Canadian cow on Tuesday,
which sent a ripple through the beef industry.
The Board reacted harshly as we saw the first
limit-down losses in quite some time. However,
the cash trade still holds a healthy premium to
the soon to end May contract, and with the
June contract closing at 73.15 on Thursday the
western direct feedyards hold around a 7.00
premium on their cattle. However, due to the
BSE case, especially since it has finally hit so
close to home, there is now a dark cloud of
skepticism over the red meat Industry. The bor
ders have been closed, although it has yet to be
measured what kind of effect the outbreak will
have on the U.S. market. It is definitely a dou
ble-edged sword, as many local producers feel
the closing of the border will turn into an in
creasing demand for U.S. cattle. On the other
hand, if Americans fear that the BSE case is in
fact to close for comfort, the wavering consumer
confidence alone could send prices tumbling.
While many households throughout the U.S.
are beginning to knock the dust off of their
backyard grills, it will be a great measure in the
confidence people have in the outstanding prod
uct known as U.S. beef. Slaughter Holstein
steers sold with a firmer undertone throughout
