HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) Pennsylvania farmers
have been called on many times
to do their part to help protect
our environment. The latest call
involves agriculture’s role in the
battle against the West Nile
virus.
West Nile virus is a mosquito
borne disease that affects people,
birds, horses, livestock, and pets.
Most people who develop the dis
ease will get only mild, flu-like
symptoms, although a few will

Trench and ground silos are
also excellent breeding grounds
for the mosquitoes carrying the
West Nile virus.
In these areas, tires are com
monly used to weigh down the
plastic wrap covering the silage.
Tires are notorious for gathering
small, shallow pools of water and
providing sheltered breeding
grounds for mosquitoes. Cutting
the sidewalls out of the tires is an
excellent way to avoid this prob
lem. Some tire recyclers already
do this.
