Goats: Compared to last Monday, Kid goats
sold mostly steady to instances weaker on
mixed demand. Kids weighing from 40-60 lbs
that have some meat on them are still in good
demand, however, lighter-weight Kids that are
thin are being purchased accordingly. Yearlings
were not tested due to the light supply Nannies
sold with a firmer undertone, with the top-end
of the heavier Nannies trending sharply higher.
Buyer demand was very good for the Nannies
as prices moved above the 100.00 mark. Billies
sold firm to 13.00 higher, with not enough
Wethers for a market test. Buyer activity for all
classes was spurred on by lighter receipts, with
basically the demand holding steady but the
light run forcing bids higher. All goats are sold
on a per head basis, with estimated weights.

Compared to Thursday, slaughter steers sold
fully 1.00 higher with bids up to 2.00 higher on
the higher quality stock. The quality of both the
Monday and Tuesday run was outstanding,
with buyers responding to the improved finish
by pushing Prime steers up to over 86.00 at
times; with an estimated 60 percent of the two
day run trading at or above the 80.00 mark.
What a difference a year makes, as this time
last year Choice steers were bringing from
68.00-71.00; and as you can imagine local pro
ducers are sporting some pretty wide grins.
However, there is always a downside, as many
feeders are keeping an ear pinned to their ra
dios while they are busy planting corn, just
waiting to hear the noon futures and western fat
market reports. Although, it will take a lot more
than the bearish tone of the summer contracts
at the Merc to put a damper on the current
market. Holstein steers sold fully 1.00-2.00
higher on a light run, with most of the increase
on the Monday run. There were not enough
slaughter heifers for a market test. Breaking

Compared to Tuesday, slaughter steers sold
fully 1.00-2.00 higher. The quality of the run
was very good, as the vast majority of the run
was comprised of Choice and Prime steers;
which looked more like the hard-fed Lancaster
Countv cattle the area is known for. This week
in the county finished prices have advanced
2.00-4.00 when compared to last week's closing
bids. Needless to say, bidding was extremely ac
tive Thursday. On Tuesday single steers were
trading up to 86.00 if they would grade Prime,
however, on Thursday there were packages
trading up to 86.00. One would like to think
they know why prices have sky- rocketed lately,
but very few producers are questioning it; as
long as it stays good. On the technical side, the
national meat and finished trades have both
been bullish, the meat more so than the direct
feedyards. Boxed beef cutout values for a
600-750 lb carcass are over 7.00 higher this
week through Thursday, although there re
mains a 19 cent spread between the Select and
Choice boxes as packers are quick to remind
Holstein steers were in good demand, and sold
steady to 1.00 higher. However, Choice and
lower grades were not as hot. as bids were most
ly steady and even noted as weaker at times
when compared to the light Tuesday run. There
were not enough slaughter heifers on hand to
test the market. All classes of slaughter cows
sold fully 1.00-3.00 higher in very active fading
and good buyer attendance. Demand was good,
but the run was rather light, which forced buy
ers to put a little mote on their bids. There was
a very good supply of fleshy (65-75 percent
lean) cows on hand, especially when compared
to the early week runs. Slaughter bulls sold
steady to firm when compared to the good
Monday run. There was a very good supply of
bulls on hand, with bidding active, especially on
the fancy high dressers. The run included 1201
head of cattle which is around 300 head lighter
than last week as more producers are beginning
to worry more about getting their crops in the
ground than they are sending in cattle. The sup
ply included 651 head of steers, 359 cows, 37
heifers, 74 bulls, with 80 head of feeder cattle.
