Correspondent ROARING SPRING (Blair County) Terry (Woody) and Dr. Gail Woodring hosted the annual Pennsylvania Draft Horse and Mule Association on a recent spring day on their farm. About 70 people attended from all parts of the state. “It’s a sharing experience,” says Gail. “We teach others how to ride, breed, make money with draft horses, and share experiences.” While the event began on Satur day, those who stayed over for Sunday enjoyed a wagon train ride. A skillet breakfast of potatoes, sau sage, onion, and eggs started the day. Events throughout Saturday in cluded a program on proper feed ing presented by Mark F. James, DVM and Linda Thoms talking about show braiding and tail tying. Terry Woodring showed his guests how to properly fit and har ness a draft horse. Chris Cole presented a program on the importance of minerals in the diet. Meets a draft horse and lessons in driving were given. “I remember participating in one of those driving classes,” smiles Gail Woodring. “I could barely drive one in the beginning. By the end of the weekend, I was driving a team of six.” “We do just about anything a draft horse can do,” says Shannon Maning from York. “We show them, ride them, drive them. “I already know a lot but still learned a few things at this meet ing,” she says. Shannon has Perch erons. Tammy Furry from New Enter prise has Clydesdales. “I use them for raking hay, plowing, hauling manure, weddings, and picnics,” she says. Tammy grew up in a fam ily with draft horses and fell in love with them at an early age. She was working with Judge Jess Darlington from Centre Hall in teaching 4-H members how to show their horses. “We just think it’s been a great weekend,” Terry Woodring said as he turned around to show off his t shirt which read, “Life is simple.
