Prime steers late in the week, but only on select sales.
The steer supplies in Lancaster County remain heavy,
as steer receipts lopped over 1100 head this week.
Local producers are cleaning out their bams as we
head into summer, although most of the steers are
coming out about 200 lbs lighter than normal as the
dry summer of 2002 finally takes its toll on the feed
supplies. The cost of hay and corn do not justify con
tinued feeding of these lighter steers, as even the lower
quality grades arc trading for as much as 77.00 The
Western direct feed yards moved their live steers
steady to 1.00 higher this week from 78.00-7900, and
at mostly 126 00 dressed The May live cattle contract
at the Merc remains at around a 2 00-3 00 discount to
the cash trade, currently trading at 76 20 The July and
August contracts are in the upper 60.00 money, and
have kept a little bearishness in the finished market, al
though prices remain very good for fat cattle both at
the local and national level Holstein steers sold 1 00
higher early in the week, only to face the first losses m
weeks on Thursday as prices were mostly 1.00 lower
Slaughter cows sold weak to 3 00 lower early in the
week, with most losses on the fleshier (65-75 percent
lean) cows Most of the undertone in the cow market
early in the week is due to the light buyer demand
Fleshy cows sold 1 00-2 00 higher on Thursday as
buyer attendance improved, with Lean cows trading
50-1.00 higher The cow supplies are thinning out as
most cows are being turned out on grass, and as long as
they remain healthy enough to give a few pounds of
milk per day farmers are not bringing them to town as
most are busy with field work The supply this week
included 1117 head of steers, 151 heifers, 915 cows, 163
bulls, with 249 head of feeder cattle
