Dairy Producers, Agribusinesses Invited SYRACUSE, N.Y. Several of the Northeast’s major dairy cooperatives have joined together to host informational meetings on the (Cooperatives Working To gether) (CWT) program. The meetings are open to all dairy producers and agribusiness professionals who are interested in learning more about the details of this national program. CWT was developed through the National Milk Producers Fed eration (NMPF) with input from dairy producers from across the country. Dale Olver, instructor in dairy and animal science, has re ceived the 2003 Excellence in Ac ademic Advising Award from Penn State’s College of Agricul tural Sciences Alumni Society. The award recognizes faculty for outstanding service to students in academic advising, career plan ning and persona] counseling. Olver, co-advisor of the Dairy Science Club, is coach of the Dairy Cattle Judging Team. He advises approximately 25 under graduate students per year, and he works with eight to 20 under graduates each year in indepen dent studies/teaching assistant activities. He teaches courses in animal science, dairy judging, dairy cat tle production and management, dairy cattle evaluation and selec tion, and dairy science that are taken by hundreds of students Woodland Tour Set BEDFORD (Bedford Co.) Woodland Owners of the South ern Alleghenies, the organization well known for the annual forest ry conference it sponsors in late winter, has planned three woodlot-related programs free of charge to the public. Thursday, May 22, a tree thinning tour has been planned with Dave Scamardella of the Bureau of Forestry as he marks the trees to be cut for a thinning and explains why he chose those trees. The tour will take place on the property of John and Judy Herr outside Everett. It will begin at 11 a.m. and be limited to 20 persons. Participants are asked to bring a cov ered dish for lunch. The first tour is scheduled for August 20 near Mann’s Choice. The other will take place in Co-op, and other cooperatives have worked collectively to set up meetings across the Northeast. The CWT Program is a multi dimensional, farmer-led and farmer-funded program created to improve milk prices by addres sing supply and demand imbal ances. There is an oversupply of milk of between four and five bil lion pounds. The CWT program will work to achieve its goal by providing incentives for increased butter and cheese exports and to encourage farmers to voluntarily reduce milk production. Regional supply issues have been taken into consideration in development of the CWT pro gram. The program will guard against a disproportionate loss of production capacity on a regional basis. The 32 cooperative members of NMPF are expected to formally each year. Olver also works with youth involved in 4-H dairy programs. He provides leadership to the state 4-H dairy program and coordinates several 4-H dairy events, such as the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show. In addition to receiving high praise from a host of students he currently advises, Olver who will receive an engraved brass plate and $l,OOO honorarium at Penn State’s commencement cer emonies got support from a Southeast Regional Twilight Fruit Growers Meeting Planned POTTSVILLE (Schuylkill Co.) Fruit growers and indi viduals interested in growing fruit are invited to the twilight meeting sponsored by Penn State Cooperative Extension, Tuesday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Jersey Acres Farms, Inc., 1615 Panther Valley Road, Pine Grove. This meeting will qualify for update credits to ward pesticide recertification. Dr. Greg Krawczyk, Penn State Extension Entomologist from the Biglerville Fruit and | Custom Fabrication of Galvanized Barn Equipment approve and commit to investing in the'program when they meet on May 9. The members of NMPF collectively market 70 percent of all milk produced in the U.S. Program details are ex pected to be released following this meeting. The informational meetings in the Northeast will begin May 14 and continue through the end of the month. Additional meetings could be added in June and the cooperatives would publicize those meeting dates and locations when scheduled. All dairy pro ducers, including members of the cooperatives hosting the meet ings, members of other coopera tives, and independent producers are encouraged to attend along with members of the agribusiness community.
