Since the villages and
farms in the Tyrol were ac
cessible only by narrow
paths, the ponies were agile
and surefooted ponies. Art
work from the region from
the early 1800 s depict a
small chestnut pony with
packs and riders traversing
steep mountain trails.
The first official documen-
tation of the present day
Haflinger was in 1874 when
the foundation stallion “249
Folie” was born of the half-
Arab stallion crossebred with
a native Tyrolean mare.
During World War 11,
according to the website,
pack horses were needed by
the military
and a short
er draftier
Haflinger fit
the bill.
Postwar, the
height and
refinement
of the breed
has re-
tumed.
The modem Haflinger is
found all over the world, ac
tive in such varied uses as
draft work, packing, light
harness and combined driv
ing, western and trail riding,
endurance riding, dressage
and jumping, vaulting and
therapeutic riding programs.
The breed was first im-
ported to the U.S. for pulling
contests.
All-Around Family Pony

Deibler, owner, and Gerald
Allebach, farm manager,
