Compared to Thursday, the bulk of the
Choice slaughter steers sold steady. Buyer inter
est was very good on Monday on all grades as a
firmer undertone was noted on the Choice and
Prime cattle; with the lower quality grades trad
ing up to 100 higher. Buyer participation was
still relatively good on Tuesday, but the demand
was not as great for the Select stock. There may
be a heavy IS cent discount on Select cattle in
the packing house but it sure is not apparent in
the sale barn as Select steers are bringing as
much as 77.00; while Prime steers trade in the
80.00-83.00 range. Many local feeders have flat
run out of feed, and most are opting to go ahead
and send them to town as Select or low Choice
cattle instead of paying to run more com
through them and have them still bring about
the same money on the hoof with 1000-2000
more pounds on them. Holstein steers sold 1.00
to instances of 2.00 higher in the Choice supply.
The slaughter heifer supply was light, and a
trend was not established. Breaking and Boning
cows sold a full 1.00 lower when compared to
Thursday's active trade. Lean slaughter cows
sold weak to 1.00 lower. While the early week
markets may be lower, the demand for cows is
still very good; especially late in the week when
buyer attendance increases. The runs are light
ening up in Lancaster County as more farmers
head back to the fields to plant com, and are
turning their cows out on the green grass pas
tures With the price of dressed beef remaining
high, it only makes sense for cow plants to pay
more for the fleshy cows as they can use the
middle meat cuts out of their fleshier cows, in-

Compared to Tuesday, slaughter steers sold
unevenly steady. However, the bulk of the run,
especially a very good test of Choice steers, sold
weak to .50 lower. There was some firmness
noted at times on the high quality stock, but it
was only on isolated sales. Live weights contin
ue to be below normal, as most of the steers are
weighing from 1100-1300 lbs; regardless of their
finish. It's a shame to see some of the reputation
cattle feeders in the county being forced to ship
their steers to town because they have run out
of feed. Most of the producers usually finish a
high Choice or Prime steer that weighs from
1350-1450 lbs, which makes it easy for the buy
ers who are after the high quality stock. How
ever, despite the feed situation, producers are
still able to put some pretty good finish on
them: and packers have grown a little more pa
tient as they sit through a 700 head ran looking
to put two pot loads of the good kind together.
Holstein steers sold 1.00-2.00 lower, and experi
enced their first set back in months. The quality
of the Holstein supply was average to good,
with only a few packages of hard finished steers
which sold closer to steady. There were not
enough slaughter heifers early in the week to
trend the late week ran. Breaking and Boning
slaughter cows sold 1.00-2.00 higher, with the
bulk of the increase on the 65-75 percent lean
very good. Slaughter bulls sold with a weaker
undertone when compared to the very light
Tuesday run The supply included 718 head of
steers, 74 heifers, 432 cows, 90 bulls, with 180
head of feeder cattle
