Compared to Thursday's active market, slaughter
steers sold weak to 50 lower, with sales up to 100
lower at times. The quality of the supply was below av
erage as the bulk of the steers went into the high Select
and low Choice category Packers are very aware of the
feed situation in the state, as many feeders are running
very low. and have put a pretty serious discount on the
Select animals Slaughter Holstein steers sold with a
firmer undertone on a light test, with the slaughter
heifer supply not tested All classes of slaughter cows
sold mostly steady when compared to the Monday run
However, when comparing to Thursday, fleshy cows
sold fully 2 00 lower Buver demand has been excellent
late in the week on the Breaking cows, which has
caused the market to fluctuate from early to late week
The supply included 290 head of steers, 44 heifers, 289
cows, 21 bulls, with the balance 45 head of feeder cat

Compared to Tuesday's light run, slaughter steers
sold fully 100 higher, with sales up to 150 higher at
times When compared to last Thursday's market,
prices trended near steady to firm The quality of the
run was very good, with some well fed stock on offer
However, live weights remain very low as there are
very few steers weighing over 1400 lbs available A cou
ple of Kosher buyers were in the hunt for some heavier
cattle, and its hard to tell what a hard finished set of
black cattle weighing about 1450 lbs would have sold
for, especially late Buyer activity was good for the ma
jority of the run, especially early and late, only drop
ping off a little as the quality dipped. The quality of the
Holstein run was also very good, much to the relief of
the colored cattle buyers, as they used some of the
spots to put some weight on their loads. Slaughter Hol
stein steers sold steady to firm when compared to
Tuesday's light supply. The slaughter heifer supply
was mixed, in the process of over-finishing the bulk of
them, the females got a little too much age on them
with some looking like they had either calved or
sluffed a calf Therefore, most of the heifers were either
put in the Yield Grade 4 category, or quoted as Heife
rettes Breaking and Boning cows sold firm to 1 50
higher, with Lean cows trading 50 to mostly 1.00 high
er; with prices up to 150 higher on a few standouts
Slaughter bulls sold with a higher undertone when
compared to Tuesday's light supply. The cattle run in
cluded 601 steers, 84 heifers, 384 raws, 104 bulls, with
the balance 132 head of feeders.

LAST WEEK
LAST YEAR
Compared to last week, slaughter steers sold 50-1 00
lower early, trading 100-1 50 higher late in the week
Hie quality of the stock early in the week was below
average, with the late week supply consisting of some
very well finished steers The only thing lacking late in
the week was weight, as the Kosher buyers were look
ing high and low trying to put a load together averag
ing over 1400 lbs The weights of the carcasses hanging
in the coolers in the western packinghouses are also
lighter, but that is to be expected as packers continue
to pick green cattle out of the direct yards as the feed
lots cash in on the bullish market The situation in
Pennsylvania is different, live weights are down be
cause producers are feeding their last bucketful of
com, as the feed situation remains severe The direct
yards moved the bulk of their cattle from 78 00-78 50
this week, which is firm to 100 higher Dressed sales in
Nebraska sold 1 00 higher at mostly 125 00 There is a
drastic difference between Choice and Select cutout
values, over 17 cents to be exact However, the major
feeding areas in the western states must not be shying
away from sending them to the rail on the Choice/
Select bubble hoping they will grade Choice, as the
USDA is reporting steers estimated to grade under 35
percent Choice to over 80 percent Choice, from
77 00-79 00 The slaughter heifer supply was mixed
this week, with the heaviest run coming late in the
week. Although, the bulk of the late week run had
some age on it, and was discounted The slaughter Hol
stein runs remain very good, with many buyers still
using the hard-feds to put some weight on their colored
loads Holstein steers continue to trade steady to firm
tram week to week Lean slaughter cows sold near
steady the opening two days of the week; with fleshy
cows taking a hit on Monday and Tuesday as prices
were 1 00-2 00 lower Late in the week, buyer demand
and attendance picked up and all grades of cows as
prices were 50-1 50 higher The cow runs keep getting
lighter in Lancaster County, which is expected as the
grass is green Farmers would rather turn them out on
grass, especially if they can still get a few pounds of
milk out of them every day, than hassle with bringing
them to town as they are right in the middle of their
fieldwork The reported supply in Lancaster County
this week included 957 head of steers, 149 heifers, 879
cows, 258 bulls, and 268 head of feeder cattle
