Dairy Market Outlook
(Continued from Page Al 6)
The cooperative has gone a
long way in the last seven years.
After the fall of the Soviet Union,
all the collective farms were bro
ken up. The cheese plants no
longer had a supply of milk.
They approached lon to help set
up collection stations in and
around the village. I arrived just
as one truckload of
milk was arriving
from a collection sta
tion. They were un
loading it into a cool
ing tank. It takes
about 4 hours to chill
the milk for delivery.
There was already a
second truck loaded
up with milk that was
to be delivered to a
nearby cheese plant.
Milk is a key indus
try in much of rural
Moldova. It supplies
the villagers with a
steady source of hard
currency. They can
also use the milk to
purchase supplies and

other necessary items. For exam
ple, one of the services of the co
operative is to offer credit to their
members to purchase necessary
supplies. I saw loaves of bread
neatly stacked in one of the
rooms in the cooperative. The vil
lagers can then barter bread for
milk. This is one way the cooper

“A REMINDER OF DAYS GONE BY”
We are, once again, making silo doors in our shop. For several years we had them contracted out, but
this year we geared up to “do it again”. This gives us a little better control over inventory and quality.
Primarily, our doors are for our own Sollenberger Silos; however, we make several styles of doors.
We make each of the doors out of Western Red Cedar, buying the grade closest to “A” which is clear of knots,
and used in the furniture industry. Our doors are virtually free of knots, you the few you will see are small and
tight. Door hardware for the Sollenberger doors is hot-dipped galvanized, and includes two %” steps.
If you need silo doors, silo unloaders, or equipment, call Randy Gayman at 717-262-2908.
