Rep. Hershey Receives Friend Of Beginning Farmer Award
MANHEIM (Lancaster Co.) As a farmer and a leg
islator, Rep. Arthur Hershey (R-13) of Cochranville un
derstands the need to help new farmers get started, par
ticularly in rapidly urbanizing areas such as Chester
County.
The 10-term lawmaker has deep roots in the limestone
soils of Chester County, where his oldest son, Duane, op
erates the 350-cow family farm that Hershey started in
1959.
Putting his words into actions, Hershey demonstrated
his commitment to helping the next generation get
started by beginning the planning process with Duane
when he was only six. Although Hershey was dedicated
to treating his four children fairly, he realized that that
doesn’t necessarily mean equally. When setting up the
farm transfer, he took into consideration the many years
his son had helped on the farm and his investment in the
farm.
A supportive spouse is essential too, he says, so he rec
ommends waiting until a child has married and both are
interested in a farming venture. He believes parents
should do everything possible to enable their children to
succeed. He said. “ When we leave this earth, the only
thing we leave are our children ... that’s something
money can’t replace.”
Hershey’s interests
in farming go beyond
his family and his
farm. His dual inter
ests in agriculture and
the environment are il
lustrated by his work
as a Chester County
lawmaker on the
House Agriculture and
Rural Affairs Commit
tee and serving as
chair of the Environ
mental Resources and
Energy Committee. As
a sponsor of the Grow

tion, Hershey worked
to find the difficult
balance between pro

addressing current fis
cal constraints.
