who are committed to the dairy industry and who
are active in dairy and farm organizations.
The Frenches manage Skip-A-Dale Farm,
where they milk 95 Jerseys and Holsteins and
farm 200 acres. They are both equally involved in
a variety of dairy and agricultural activities and
received the Cooperative Leadership Award from
the Virginia Council of Farmer Cooperatives last
year. They have two sons, Tyler and Tabb, and are
expecting a third child in May.
First runners-up were Tom and Terry Lam from
Bridgewater, Va. The couple milks 140 cows and
farms 600 acres on South Bound Holsteins, the
dairy portion of Walnut Grove Farm, Tom’s fami
ly turkey, beef and dairy cattle operation. Tom
was a national finalist in the Young Farmers Asso
ciation’s Spokesperson for Agriculture Contest.
Terry was a high school agriculture and FFA ad
viser for six years and received the 2002 Outstand
ing Young Teacher Award from the Virginia Asso
ciation of Ag Educators. The Lams have a one
year-old daughter, Cassidy.
Second runners-up were John and Mary Good
win from Orange, Va. They operate a 1,600-acre
100-cow dairy farm in partnership with John’s fa
ther. John was named the “Cooperative Young
Farmer of the Year” by the Virginia Council of
Farmer Cooperatives. Mary works for Orange-
Madison Cooperative Farm Service and was
named the Outstanding Virginia State 4-H Dairy
Leader. The Goodwins have two sons, John Wall
er and Robert Byrd.
All six winners are Virginia Tech graduates and
will be attending the National Milk Producers
Federation Annual Meeting and YC Conference in
New Orleans, La., in November. The Frenches will
also attend the Washington Conference sponsored
by the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives
in Washington, D.C. in June. In addition to the
national conferences, the Frenches will have the
opportunity to attend Maryland & Virginia’s
board meetings this year.
Participants were evaluated on their dairy ca
reer progress, communication skills, cooperative
knowledge, and organizational activities based on
an application, interview and prepared comments
about an industry issue. The Frenches discussed
political action committees; the Lams discussed
dairy promotion; and the Goodwins discussed es
tate tax repeal legislation.
