As with most collectibles some are downright ugly while others are beautiful. This interest has been reflected in Americana auctions and in antique shops specializing in 18th, 19th, and early 20th cen tury objects. There is even a new Price Guide, “Official Price Guide to American Patri otic Memorabilia” by Mi chael Polak, a collector. A collection can go in many directions. Not only can it specialize in antique or contemporary objects, but concentrate on art, ar tifacts and decorative ob jects, to mention a few. A contemporary collection could focus on items made after September 11, from anti-Bin Laden posters and banners to glass and weav ings. One of my favorite discoveries was in a North Carolina rifle shop. A hand-painted dart board with Bin Laden’s likeness and red, white and blue darts. This can be the folk art of tomorrow. Doubtless there will more indivi.dually-made symbols. There’s nothing new about patriotic symbols. They’ve been around since and before the American Revolution.
