    Check For Mites
(Continued from Page E 9)
mouthpart into the cell and draws out
the cell contents, leaving a shrunken
cell. It then moves to another cell and
continues feeding. Very rapidly, the
plant displays a “rolled” characteristic
that is very similar to drought stress.
The tip-off to an infestation is the
droughty symptom in April or May
when adequate soil moisture is avail
able.
Severe mite infestations have two
negative impacts. Severe feeding
causes substantial yield losses. Yield
loss estimates range from 30 to 70 per
cent. Severe feeding has resulted in
stressed stands that are not able to
withstand extreme summer growing
conditions, especially droughts and
high temperatures. A second impact of
the mite is related to forage quality.
Under high mite pressures, the hay
cures with a brownish discoloration.
This off-color makes horse producers
reluctant to pay top dollar.

Research is continuing into alterna
tive control methods. There is some
thinking that extremely low cutting in
late fall discourages population build
ups during the winter. Initial results
do not show any advantage to clipping
timothy in the fall for mite control.
Investigation studies into possible
timothy variety resistance were also es
tablished in Maryland and Pennsylva
nia. Results from one year of data col
lection showed no variety preference
or rejection by the mites. All varieties
were affected by the mites. For more

Controls
There are no “natural” enemies of
this pest, primarily due to the fact that
it develops during winter and is dor
mant during the summer. A supple
mental label use, called a “24 <9 ” was
granted for Pennsylvania timothy pro
ducers to use Sevin XLR as a tempo-

of 35 varieties, Ist cut 2002.
IQ.Pizza Orchardgrass-
Nearly 6% higher digestible fiber than
Baridana, and 400# more milk/ton than

11. Glacier Timothy-
The highest yielding at Cornell, 1.3 tons

and 3% higher dNDF than Climax.

rary solution for the cereal rust mite in
2001. Label directions call for the use
of two to three pints per acre of Sevin
XLR with adequate carrier for com
plete coverage of the timothy, a min
imum of 20 gallons/acre (25 gal./acre is
preferred).
Treatment is recommended approx
imately three to four weeks after
green-up to fields with a past history
of mite infestation or when 25 percent
of plant tillers exhibit curled tips. Ap
plication is restricted to one time per
cutting and must be made at least 30
days prior to harvest.
Follow all application directions and
safety requirements. Many growers
have included broadleaf herbicides
and nitrogen fertilizer in their applica
tions. Be sure not to apply too much
nitrogen or too little carrier. Stick with
25 gallons/acre of a carrier of water
and liquid N.
Note that Sevin controls the mite by
coming into contact with these small
critters. This is the reason that high
rates of carrier are needed for opti
mum control.
Shown is a stand of good
timothy exhibiting no infesta
tions of mites, as evidenced by
the leaves being open in ap
pearance.
