Be Wary Of Thieves

With spring upon us, farmers are starting to in
ventory anhydrous ammonia to use for their spring
plantings, and a lot of would-be thieves know’ is.
Without a doubt, these thieves are using anhydrous
ammonia to make methamphetime, which is an 11-

Meth or what is also called crank or ice is a high
ly addictive drug that can be less expensive an
easier to obtain than other illegal drugs.
Right now, meth is the drug of choice among
rural communities and is also becoming the drug o
choice in suburban and urban areas.
Drug use tends to be cyclical, and right now
we’re in a meth cycle. We don’t see this going away
any time soon. Until another illegal drug replaces
it, its use will continue for quite some time.
Since April of last year, western and southern
New York counties have received more than JOU
reports of anhydrous theft and these thieves are
persistent and innovative. Some desperate thieves
have even flattened the front tires of tender tanks
in order to drain the last little bit of anhydrous out
of what most of us would consider an empty tank.
These thieves are decentralized and uncoordinat
ed groups of both runners and manufacturers.
They are desperate, reckless, and dangerous. Typi
cally, thieves are armed and use state-of-the-art
technology. And more often than not they have
predetermined their targets and do a fair amount
of organizing and planning before they strike.
Once they start stealing from a farm, they keep
going back until the product runs out or they fear
detection. That’s part of the reason why we ask
anyone in the community to report suspicious be
havior. Most arrests involving anhydrous ammonia
are because of someone reporting suspicious behav
ior.
We are not just concerned about the theft of the
anhydrous ammonia, but we are also concerned
about everything else that surrounds the theft of
anhydrous.
If anhydrous is being stolen in your area, that
means there is a roaming meth lab close by and
drugs in your schools.
If you see suspicious activity on your farm or on
a neighbor’s property report it immediately. Don’t
take the matter into your own hands. These thieves
are almost always under the influence of drugs,
and they really don’t care about the safety of oth
ers, let alone their own, so don’t approach the ac
tivity or vehicle. Call law enforcement immediate-
ly-

ly, employees, and
neighbors and encour

ty, too. Reporting sus
picious activity is crit
ical so that law
enforcement has a
clear picture of the
scope of the problem
and know where and
what to look for.
Also keep your
tanks in well-lit loca
tions, preferably with
motion sensor lights
that can easily be ob
served by family and
neighbors.
Avoid storing port
able tanks in plain
view, and keep them
in an inconspicuous
location to avoid de
tection by a passerby.
Keep an eye on
your anhydrous in
ventory and, whenev
er possible, take a
quick look at your
storage tanks. If you
get up at night, take a
look.

Locking a tank
valve has proven to be
a less than effective
measure, because we
have found that thieve
will break the tank
valve off, not only
leaving you with a
theft, but an environ
mental problem as
well. Fencing or other
physical barriers may
bring greater success.
