Venini glassworks. A pair of his
chickens, c. 1950 have sold for
$19,000 at auctions. Humorous glass
animals were designed from the
1920 s until 1931 by Paolo Venini.
Collectors pay top dollar for them.
Many Italian glass factories made
figural animals. Their paper labels
have long ago disappeared, which is
good news for iffy dealers and bad
news for beginning collectors.
Another problem for collectors is
that the Venini Glassworks is repro
ducing designs from the 1940 s
through the 19605. Among them the
popular commedia del I’arte figures,
handkerchief vases and bottles.
Since a variety of signatures and
paper labies were used by Venini
over the years, it pays to go to the
many Modernism shows and talk to
dealers.
They will be happy to point out
important facts.

catalogs featuring Italian glass. They
feature prices and various Venini
signatures.
When beginning collectors think
of 20th century Italian glass, Paolo
Venini most readily come to mind.
Yet, there are many other important
designers to consider. Among them
is Ercole Barovier, whose work en
compassed not only the 1920 s but
into the Modem period. Another,
Fulvio Bianconi, is considered one of
the most important Italian glass de
signers of the postwar years. Their
works can sell in the high thousands.
Some tips for recognizing the
works of leading designers can help.
For example, the designs used by
Barovier and his firm, “Barovier and
Toso” are abstract sculptural forms
with minute bubbles and spots of
color within the glass, and some also
feature colorful, irregular and ab
stract squares.
