THIS WEEK
LAST WEEK
LAST YEAR
Compared to last week, slaughter steers sold
firm to .50 higher early in the week; trending
steady to weak on Thursday The Western di
rect feedyards moved the bulk of their show
lists mid-week from 80.00-81.00 live, and
130 00-131.00 on a dressed basis. This put a
higher undertone in the red meat market as
boxed beef was over 4.00 higher by Thursday.
However, local steer prices failed to break
steady even m the face of the extremely bullish
national markets. For the first time in a few
months the current contract at the Merc is at a
discount to the cash trade, as the April contract
is trading at around 77.00; with the mid to late
summer contracts remaining bearish as they
trade m the upper 60.00 range. Slaughter Hol
stein steers sold fully 1.00-2.00 higher early in
the week, with the late week supply trading
steady to weak. The demand for stems contin
ues to remain fairly good, as buyers are able to
take some of the sting off of their colored loads
by tossing a few spots m the mix. Although,
most of the Holstems that have been on offer
the past few weeks have been very well fed, and
once the hides are pulled off most could proba
bly go on the same Choice rail with their black
counterparts Slaughter heifers sold steady to
firm on a light test Slaughter cows sold
2 00-4.00 higher for the week due to very good
demand The cow runs are beginning to taper
off a little in Lancaster County, with the runs
expected to get fairly light as we head into sum
mer; as the grass greens up many farmers will
turn a lot of their cows out to graze instead of
selling them. This week's reported supply m
Lancaster County included 1282 head of steers,
144 heifers, 966 cows, 98 bulls, with 217 head of
feeder cattle
Note: The first feeder cattle specials in Lan
caster County this spring will begin in a couple
of weeks. The Vintage Sales Stables will hold a
special feeder sale on Monday Apni the 21st,
with New Holland Sales Stables holding a feed
er special on Friday April the 25th

Managers Can Improve Reproduction, Milk Production
UNIVERSITY PARK
(Centre Co.) Modem dairy
farms must have manage
ment systems that help peo
ple to do the right jobs the
right way and at the right
time. This may sound simple
enough, but it takes a lot of
thought and planning to de
sign and implement such sys
tems with a workforce.
Dairy Alliance will con
duct two workshops that will
help dairy managers and ad
visers to greatly improve day
to-day performance from
their employees in specific
dairy production areas.
The Reproductive Man
agement Systems Workshop
is scheduled Wednesday,
April 23, from 9 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. at the Donahoe Center
in Greensburg. The workshop
will focus on the standard op

monitoring tactics, and feed-

buyer competition is all but void Holstein bull
calves going into special-fed veal bams sold
sharply higher at the two graded sales this
week Northeast special-fed veal sold mostly
2.00 lower this week, with the 5797 head report
ed by the USDA trading from 185.00-192.00 for
215-275 lb hide-off carcasses. Holstein heifers
continue to remain under 300.00 at most area
sales, with buyer interest moderate to light. This
week the PA Department of Agriculture graded
733 head of bulls and heifers for the two graded
sales m Lancaster County, which is around 200
