Beef Expo Junior Heifer, Steer Show Winners Announced STATE COLLEGE (Centre Co.) “Where’s the Beef?” That question was easy to an swer for those who attended the 2003 Pennsylvania Beef Expo, March 27-30. This year, Pennsylvania Junior Cattlemen’s Association (PJCA) members from six states came to gether to compete in one of the biggest Expo Junior shows to date. Conducted at the Penn State Agricultural Arena in State Col lege, the 13 th Annual Pennsylva nia Beef Expo Junior Show was dedicated to Samuel E. Hayes, Jr. in recognition of his outstanding support of the PJCA. Dan Eversole, professor & live stock coach at the Virginia Col lege of Technology served as the 2003 Beef Expo judge. The Junior Heifer Show began Saturday, March 29, at 3 p.m. with record attendance and qual ity animals. Nine breeds com peted for overall grand champion heifer. The champion Simmental heif er, owned by Tim Schaeffer of Meyerstown, was named overall grand champion heifer. Reserve champion overall heif er was exhibited by Sara Jo Campbell of Sycamore, with her Shorthorn heifer. Expo activities resumed Sun day morning with the showman ship competition beginning at 8 Am. Chelsea Wieben captured sen ior champion showman honors followed by Cortney Hill-Duke hart, who won the reserve senior showman honors. In the intermediate division, Jack Clark won intermediate champion showman, and reserve champion intermediate showman went to Dayna Filges. Luke Phipps was chosen as junior champion showman; re serve junior champion showman honors went to Katrina Frey. The novice division champion showman honors were captured by Jessi Bruss with reserve cham pion novice showman going to Samuel Wingert. The Junior Steer Show started immediately following the show manship competition boasting re cord numbers this year with 165 steers competing for grand cham pion honors. When the dust settled, the ban ner went to Matt Fogle of Wood bine, Md., with his champion heavyweight steer. Jacob Wheeler of Somerset ex hibited the reserve overall cham pion steer. The PJCA Heifer and Steer Shows are held annually in con junction with the Pennsylvania Beef Expo.
